Morning Reflections: Finding Refuge and Security in God’s Presence

Yesterday, we rested in the idea of trust over worry, of letting go of tomorrow's anxieties. Today's reading from David shows us what that trust actually feels like—the deep security it creates. A Miktam of David. Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

This is a psalm about security. Not the security of a locked door or a full bank account. It's something deeper. David says, “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.” Here’s what that means for you, right now, as you start your day. It means looking at the boundaries of your actual life—this specific job, this family, this home, this body—and choosing to see it as a gift. It doesn't mean your life is perfect. David wrote this while facing real enemies. But it means that even within the limitations and challenges, there are "pleasant places." There is a "beautiful inheritance." Maybe for you, that’s the quiet of the house before anyone else is awake.

Maybe it's the specific challenge at work that is making you grow. Your inheritance today isn't some far-off promise. It’s the good that is present in your life, right now, waiting to be noticed. Then David gives the reason for this security. It’s the core of the entire psalm. He says, “I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.” Here’s what that means if you're heading into a difficult meeting, or a stressful commute, or just a long list of chores. The feeling of being "shaken" comes from feeling alone in the pressure.

David's secret wasn't that he was stronger than the pressure. It was that he practiced remembering God was standing right there with him. Presence is the antidote to pressure. This changes the source of your stability. It’s not in your own ability to handle everything. It’s in the simple, constant reality of God at your right hand. And that leads to the final, powerful promise. "In your presence there is fullness of joy." Notice he doesn't say "in perfect circumstances" there is joy. Or "when you finally achieve your goals" there is joy.

He says joy is found in a place—and that place is God's presence. Joy isn't a destination for the end of the day. It is the companion for the journey itself.
