The average person checks their phone one hundred and forty-four times a day. That’s one hundred and forty-four invitations for distraction, comparison, and anxiety before your head even hits the pillow. In our last time together, we spoke about nurturing hope and patience. But patience is hard to find when our attention is pulled in a hundred different directions. Today’s reading offers a different path. Here is the reading from Philippians, chapter four, verses six and seven. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Let’s sit with that for a moment. The first words are a command, but they feel like an invitation. "Do not be anxious about anything." It can feel impossible. The bills are real. The diagnosis is real. The conflict at work is real. The verse doesn't deny the reality of our problems. It gives us a specific process for what to do with them. It says, "in every situation." Not just the big, life-altering ones.

It means the traffic jam. The spilled coffee. The email you don’t know how to answer. Every single thing that causes that knot in your stomach is an opportunity to practice this. The process has three parts. First, prayer and petition. This is simply talking to God and being specific about what you need. It’s the honesty of saying, “I’m scared about this meeting,” or “I don’t know how we’re going to pay this bill.” You are not telling God anything He doesn’t already know. You are admitting to yourself, and to Him, that you can't carry it alone.

This is the act of handing it over. But the next part is the key. It's the ingredient that changes everything. "With thanksgiving." This is the pivot. Anxiety wants us to focus only on what is wrong, what is missing, what might happen. Thanksgiving forces our eyes open to what is good, what is present, what has already been given. Here’s what that means for you, right now. When you bring your anxiety to God, don’t just list your fears. Make a second list. Thank Him for the breath in your lungs. The roof over your head.

The friend who answered your call last week. The memory of a past prayer that was answered. Thanksgiving is not about pretending the bad things aren't there. It’s about remembering the good things are there, too. It rebalances the scales in your heart. It reminds you that even in the middle of the struggle, there is still grace. And when you do this… when you combine your honest requests with genuine gratitude… something happens. The verse promises a result. "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds." Notice the words.

It’s not a peace that you can manufacture. It’s not the peace of a problem being solved. It’s a peace that “transcends all understanding.” That means it doesn’t make logical sense. The problem might still be there. The uncertainty might remain. But a deep, settled calm arrives anyway. It’s a peace that exists alongside the storm, not just after it passes. And what does this peace do? It "will guard." This is an active, military term. The peace of God stands like a sentinel at the two gates anxiety always tries to break through: your heart, where you feel, and your mind, where you worry.

It stands watch. It protects you from the spiraling thoughts and overwhelming emotions. When you feel that anxiety rising today, see it as a signal. It’s a reminder to begin the exchange. You give God your worry, your specific petition, wrapped in thanksgiving. And in return, He gives you His peace. A peace that stands guard. So when you pick up your phone for the seventh time this morning, and you feel that familiar pull of anxiety… remember the exchange. Your worry for His peace. It’s the best trade you can make.

Peace is not the absence of trouble. It is the presence of a Guard.
