Yesterday, we walked together through the green pastures of Psalm twenty-three, finding rest in the presence of the Good Shepherd. Today, we find our strength not in movement, but in stillness. From Psalm forty-six, verse ten: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Be still. Four simple words. And maybe the hardest command to follow in our modern world. From the moment our eyes open, the rush begins. The emails are already waiting. The day’s schedule is already full.

The worries from yesterday are still sitting right where we left them. The world shouts at us to hurry… to strive… to achieve. And into that noise, God whispers… be still. This isn't a suggestion to be lazy. It's not about doing nothing. It’s an invitation to stop doing everything in your own power. For just a moment. It’s a call to cease the frantic spinning of your own mind. To release your grip on the problems you’re trying to solve and the outcomes you’re trying to control. Stillness, in this verse, is an act of defiance.

It's a quiet rebellion against the tyranny of the urgent. It's you, planting your feet, taking a deep breath, and refusing to be swept away by the current of your own anxiety. And notice what happens in that stillness. It’s not empty. The verse continues… “and know that I am God.” The stillness creates the space for the knowing. This word, "know," isn't about learning a new fact. It’s not intellectual information. In the original language, it means to know by experience. It’s the deep, personal, intimate knowledge you have of a close friend.

You don’t just know about them. You know them. So the invitation is this: Stop striving, so you can start seeing. Let go of your plans, so you can recognize His presence. Quiet your own inner voice, so you can finally hear His. Here’s what that means for your day. Before you dive into your to-do list, before you open that first email… take sixty seconds. Just one minute. Close your eyes. Breathe out the pressure to perform. And in the quiet, simply acknowledge the truth: He is God. And you are not. He is in control.

He is sovereign. He is working in ways you cannot see. The second half of the verse promises it: “I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Your job is not to hold the world together. Your job is not even to hold your day together. Your job, in this moment, is simply to be still. And to let that stillness be filled with the quiet, powerful, unshakable knowledge that He is God. He has this day. And He has you. The world will keep spinning. The demands will still be there when you open your eyes.

But you will face them from a different place. Not a place of frantic effort, but a place of quiet trust. A place of stillness.
