A study from the University of California found that the average office worker gets interrupted every three minutes. In our last time together, we spoke about finding a gentle peace to start your day. Today's verse is a tool for holding onto that peace when the interruptions begin. Let this word from the Psalms settle over you. “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” That first phrase is a command. It is not a gentle suggestion.

“Be still.” In the original language, it carries the sense of letting go, of releasing your grip. It’s an instruction to stop striving, to cease the frantic work of trying to hold everything together by your own strength. It’s a call to an intentional, active stillness. This is not about having a completely empty schedule. It is about creating a quiet space inside yourself, even when the world outside is loud. Here's what that means if you're staring at a day packed with meetings.

It means taking sixty seconds before you click "join" on that video call. You close your eyes. You take one deep breath. And you release the pressure to have all the answers. You choose stillness. Here's what that means if you're feeling overwhelmed by your own thoughts, your anxieties, your to-do list. It means finding a single point of focus. Your breath. The feeling of your feet on the floor. A single word from this verse. You intentionally stop the cycle of worry, even for a moment.

You let go. But the stillness is not the final goal. The verse continues: “and know that I am God.” The quiet is the environment. The knowing is the purpose. The stillness creates the space where we can recognize a truth that was there all along. That He is God, and we are not. That His power is not dependent on our performance. His plan is not threatened by our problems. This is the key. Stillness is not about emptying your mind so you can feel better. It is about quieting your soul so you can know Him better.

It’s in that quiet that we stop hearing our own fears and start hearing His promises. The verse doesn't end there, either. It lifts our eyes from our immediate circumstances. “I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” This puts our three-minute interruptions and our overflowing inboxes into perspective. The God who commands you to be still is the same God who reigns over all of creation. Your small moment of surrender is part of a grand, cosmic story of His glory.

Here's what that means if you're facing a problem that feels impossibly big. Your stillness, your choice to trust, connects you to the power that holds the universe together. It’s an act of faith that declares that your problem is not the biggest thing in the room. God is. The world will always demand your hurry. Your phone will buzz. The next email will arrive. The noise is a constant. But this verse offers a different path. It is the practice of deliberately stopping. Of releasing your white-knuckle grip on your day.

And in that quiet space, remembering who is truly in control. The invitation today is not to find a perfect, silent moment. That rarely exists. The invitation is to practice stillness right in the middle of the noise. To let the world spin, and for one breath, to simply know that He is God.
