the sun rose this morning at 06:14am a simple predictable event in a world that often feels anything but in our last episode we talked about finding peace through a quiet morning routine today's reading gives us a powerful instruction for how to find that peace not just in the quiet but in the middle of everything else it comes from the book of proverbs here is chapter three verses five and six trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight let's sit with that for a moment this is one of the most well known passages in proverbs

but it's also one of the most challenging it contains a command a condition and a promise first the command trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding that second part is the real work lean not on your own understanding this isn't an instruction to stop thinking it's an instruction to recognize the limits of your thinking your understanding is based on past experiences current emotions and incomplete data it's a powerful tool but it can't see around corners here's what that means for you this morning when you face a decision that has you tied in knots a choice about your career a family conflict a financial worry you do your

homework you make the list of pros and cons but when you've done all that and you're still stuck that's the moment that is the moment to stop leaning surrender isn't giving up it's letting go of the belief that you have to have the entire map figured out before you take the next step then comes the condition in all your ways submit to him some translations say acknowledge him this is about scope it's not just for the big life altering decisions it's for all your ways the way you speak to your family this morning the attitude you carry into your work the way you handle a frustrating delay or an unexpected interruption acknowledging him in all

your ways means inviting his presence into the small ordinary moments here's what that means for you today it looks like a quiet two second prayer before you walk into a difficult meeting it looks like choosing patience in the checkout line it means seeing your daily tasks not as a checklist to be conquered but as a space to practice faithfulness it's a constant running conversation this is how faith moves from being an idea in your head to a reality in your hands finally the promise and he will make your paths straight notice it doesn't say he will make your paths easy or smooth or free of obstacles a straight path is simply the most direct route

it means a life of purpose and clarity it's the opposite of the feeling of being scattered running in circles wasting energy on detours and dead ends a straight path feels like alignment when your heart your mind and your actions are all pointed in the same god given direction here's what that means for you if you feel lost pulled in a dozen different directions that is the feeling of a crooked path the promise here is that if you will do the first two things trust beyond your own limited view and acknowledge him in the details he will do the course correcting he will clear away the confusion and guide you forward with purpose the question this

verse leaves us with is not about having all the answers it's about who you trust with the map your own understanding can only draw the streets you've already seen surrender is trusting the guide who knows the whole territory the one who can draw a straight line right through the wilderness you see in front of you and lead you home
