The average adult makes around thirty-five thousand decisions every single day. That’s over twenty-four choices a minute, from what to wear to how to navigate a difficult conversation. In our last reflection, we talked about staying present with scripture to find peace. Today, we look at how that peace can guide every one of those choices. Here is the reading from the book of Proverbs, chapter three, verses five and six. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. So. Thirty-five thousand decisions. And in the middle of all that noise, we get this instruction: Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart.
That word, "all," can feel impossible. It’s easy to trust God with the big, abstract things. The future. Eternity. But with all our heart? In all our ways? That means trusting him with the email you don’t know how to write. With the difficult feedback you have to give a colleague. With the frustration you feel sitting in traffic. The verse gives us a contrast. It says trust with your heart, and lean NOT on your own understanding. This is something a lot of people find confusing at first. It doesn't mean we're supposed to stop thinking or planning. God gave you a mind for a reason. The key is the word "lean." Think about what it means to lean on something.
You put your full weight on it. You depend on it to hold you up. The verse is saying, don't put your full weight on your own ability to figure everything out. Your understanding is part of the process, but it isn't the foundation. Your foundation is trust in God. Here's what that means for you today. When you face a decision, do your homework. Think it through. Use the wisdom you have. But then, before you make the final move, stop. Acknowledge that your understanding only goes so far. And then, consciously shift your weight. Move your dependence from "I hope I figured this out right" to "God, I trust you with this outcome." That shift is EVERYTHING.
It's the difference between anxiety and peace. Then we get the second part. "In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." This is the active part of the trust. Submission here isn't a passive act of giving up. It's an active, moment-by-moment choice to acknowledge His authority over your life. "All your ways" means your career path, yes. Your family life, of course. But it also means your thought patterns. The way you spend your money. The way you spend your time this afternoon. Here's what that means if you're looking at your to-do list right now. It means that every single item on that list is an opportunity.
It's a chance to say, "God, how do you want me to approach this meeting?" or "Give me wisdom for this project." It turns your daily grind into a continuous conversation with God. You're inviting him into the process, not just asking him to bless the result. And the promise for doing this is incredible. He will make your paths straight. A straight path is not necessarily an easy path. It’s not a path with no hills or struggles. A straight path is a direct one. It’s a path that avoids the detours of second-guessing, the dead ends of pride, and the winding roads of anxiety. It's the most efficient route to where you are meant to be.
God isn’t promising to remove the obstacles. He’s promising to guide you through them so you don't get lost. Today, you will make thousands of choices. You don't need to have the perfect answer for every single one. You just need to know who to lean on. Your understanding is like a map you hold in your hands. It's useful, but it can have errors, and you can misread it. Trusting in God is like walking with the guide who drew the map in the first place. He knows the terrain. He knows the destination. And he promises to get you there.
