Sunrise Reflections: Daily Bible Verse and Gentle Morning Meditation

The people of Jerusalem had been in exile for seventy years. They had just returned to a ruined city and were hearing the words of their God for the first time in a generation. In our last Sunrise Reflection, episode one-thirteen, we spoke about finding peace and direction for this year. Today’s reading comes from a moment when a whole nation found its direction, but the first feeling was not peace... it was grief. Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” So, what does this mean for us? Here's the scene. The people are standing in the rubble of their city, listening to the scriptures. And as they listen, they begin to weep. They are overwhelmed by how far they've fallen, by the weight of their own failure. Their circumstances are objectively bad. They are poor, vulnerable, and starting over from nothing. And it’s into THAT moment that Nehemiah speaks. He doesn't say, “Don’t worry, things will get better soon.” He doesn’t offer false optimism.

He says, “Go and enjoy... Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” This is a critical distinction. The joy he’s talking about is NOT happiness. Happiness depends on what’s happening. If things are good, you’re happy. If things are bad, you’re not. But the joy of the Lord is completely different. It’s a joy that is independent of your circumstances. It is a strength that comes from a source outside of yourself. Here’s what that means for your day. You will face moments today that are draining. You might get a difficult email, a frustrating phone call, or just feel the slow grind of a long to-do list. In those moments, you have a choice.

You can let the circumstances dictate your inner state. Or you can access a different source of power. The joy of the Lord isn't about pretending the difficulty doesn't exist. It's the deep, settled confidence that God is with you IN the difficulty. It’s a joy that says, "My situation is hard, but my God is faithful." It’s a joy rooted in His presence, not your performance or your problems. And notice the command that comes with it. “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared.” This joy isn't meant to be hoarded. It's not a private, quiet feeling you keep to yourself. It’s an active, generous strength.

The very first thing they are told to do with this joy is to give it away. To share their food, to look after the person who has less. That’s the proof of its power. This joy doesn't just help you survive your day; it empowers you to serve others in the middle of it. It turns your focus outward. So when you feel your energy draining away today, when the pressure mounts, remember this verse. The invitation is not to muster up more strength on your own. It is to tap into a joy that is a gift. A joy that becomes your strength. Strength isn't about having no burdens. It’s about having a source of joy so deep that the burdens CANNOT sink you.
