In one study of documented child abuse, researchers re-interviewed the victims many years later as adults. Thirty-eight percent of them denied any memory of the abuse. It was just gone. Mm-hm. It feels connected to what we were wrestling with last week, in episode eleven—the whole mystery of conscious choice. It's not just that we might not be in control of our decisions, but that our memory of the past we supposedly chose is... fundamentally unreliable. It's more than unreliable. It’s actively being rewritten. There’s this process called reconsolidation. The common metaphor is that memory is like a video file you pull up and re-watch.
But that's completely wrong. It's more like a document you open, make silent edits to based on your current mood or what someone just asked you, and then you hit 'save.' You don't even know you changed it. So every time I recall a childhood memory, I’m not just accessing it, I’m... altering it? You're altering it for the next time you access it. Yeah. That's why eyewitness testimony is so fraught with problems. A witness can be one hundred percent confident and one hundred percent wrong, because their brain has been 'saving over' the original file with every retelling, every police interview, every dream. Okay, but what about the opposite problem?
Not a distorted memory, but no memory at all. Why do I remember some random Tuesday from 2008 vividly, but I have absolutely no memory of what I ate for lunch three days ago? Right. Because your brain is a relentless editor. It's not trying to build a perfect archive; it's trying to build a useful map for the future. So it prioritizes. Novel experiences, emotionally charged events—those get encoded with incredible detail. Your brain flags them as important. So, a first kiss, or a car accident. Exactly. But your daily commute? Your lunch? It’s routine. Your brain decides that memory slot is more valuable for something else, so it just… doesn't save it.
Or it compresses it into a generic "I drove to work" file. The gap isn't a bug, it's a feature. The selectivity is the whole point. But that selectivity seems to break down around trauma. You'd think the brain would want to forget those things, but often they're the most persistent. Or, as that study you mentioned shows, sometimes they're what get erased completely. And this is where we run right into the wall of what we don't know. For a while, in the late twentieth century, the idea of "repressed memory" was very popular. The theory was that the brain would hide traumatic memories away, and they could be recovered later, often through therapy or hypnosis.
I remember that. It was everywhere in the nineties. It was. But the scientific backlash was immense, because it turns out there is NO reliable method for telling a true recovered memory from a false one created by suggestion. None. The American Medical Association even put out a warning that memories from hypnosis are particularly likely to be confabulations—they're fictions that feel real. So we have some traumas that create indelible, high-fidelity memories, and other traumas that lead to complete amnesia, and we have no model that can predict which way it will go? We have no model. We can put someone in an fMRI and see their hippocampus light up, but we can't tell you if the memory being accessed is true or false.
We can't explain why one soldier comes home with PTSD and remembers every single second, and another develops dissociative amnesia and has a total blank for the same period. It’s a profound gap in our understanding. It feels like the question isn't "how does memory work," but "who is the curator?" Who decides what stays and what goes? That's it. That's the whole mystery. We're getting better at understanding the biological hardware—the neurons, the synapses. But the software, the algorithm that decides what makes a memory worth keeping… we haven’t even found the source code for that. Your identity is just the story you have on file about yourself.
