There is no scientific instrument in the world that can measure the feeling of sadness. We can measure hormone levels, we can map brain activity with an fMRI, but the actual, subjective feeling of being sad? It’s invisible to science. And that right there is the whole game. It's the ghost in the machine. In our episode on the Placebo Paradox, we were circling this, Admin—how a subjective belief can create an objective, physical change. But that just pushes the question back one step. What is a subjective belief? Where does it come from? Right. It feels like we’re starting in the middle of the story.
So, let’s go back to the beginning. This is what philosophers call the Hard Problem of Consciousness, isn't it? Exactly. The term was coined by the philosopher David Chalmers in the nineties. He split the problem into two parts. The so-called 'Easy Problems' and the one, single, Hard Problem. Okay, what makes a problem 'easy' in this context? Because none of it sounds easy. Fair point. The easy problems are, um, about function. Things like: how does the brain process information from the eyes? How do we focus our attention on one sound in a crowded room? How do we control our bodies to walk or talk?
They're problems of mapping a mechanism. Incredibly complex, sure, but we can see a path to solving them. We can trace the wiring. So, input, processing, output. We can follow the signal from the eyeball to the brain stem to the muscle that moves my hand. Precisely. But then you get to the Hard Problem. Why does all that information processing feel like anything at all from the inside? Why is there an inner movie? Why do you have a subjective, first-person experience of the world? The experience of seeing the color red, not just the brain processing the wavelength of light. Yes! That's the classic example.
The technical term is 'qualia'—the individual, subjective instances of experience. The redness of red, the pang of jealousy, the taste of a strawberry. Science is brilliant at describing the strawberry—its molecular structure, how it activates taste receptors, the neural pathways it triggers. But nowhere in that description will you find the experience of tasting it. There's a gap. So what is that gap? Is it just that our tools aren't good enough yet? If we had a perfect brain scanner, couldn't we just point to a pattern and say, "There. THAT is the feeling of tasting a strawberry"?
But that’s the trap, you see. The pattern is still just a description from the outside. It’s correlation, not explanation. It’s like looking at a computer screen that’s displaying a beautiful image. You can analyze the liquid crystals, the voltage, the binary code for every single pixel. You can have a complete physical account of the screen. But you’ll never find the beauty of the image in the code. You will NEVER find the beauty. The code doesn't contain the beauty; it enables it. The Hard Problem is asking: how does the objective firing of neurons—the code—create the subjective experience—the beauty?
There's no logical bridge that gets you from a physical process, no matter how complex, to a private, inner feeling. It’s a jump from one category of thing to a completely different one. From objective physics to subjective... well, to you. It feels like trying to explain music to someone who can only see the sound waves on an oscilloscope. They have all the data, but they’re missing the entire point. That's a perfect analogy. And this is why it has resisted science for so long. Science, by its very nature, is a third-person endeavor. It's about objective, verifiable, measurable phenomena.
Consciousness is radically first-person. It’s the one thing you can be most certain of—that you are experiencing something—and yet it’s the one thing that is completely inaccessible to direct scientific observation. So we’re stuck. We’re trying to use a third-person toolkit to study the ultimate first-person phenomenon. We are. And honestly, that might be the most profound part of it all. We have these grand theories of the universe, of cosmology and quantum mechanics, but the very lens through which we view it all—our own awareness—is the ultimate black box. The mystery isn't out there in the stars.
It's behind our own eyes.
