In 2023, the neuroscientist Christof Koch—a man who spent decades working with Francis Crick to locate consciousness in the brain—admitted that the entire project had failed. He did. After a twenty-million-dollar adversarial collaboration testing the biggest theories, he stood up and said the brain may not create consciousness at all. For him to say that… it’s like the pope announcing he’s not sure about God. So what happened? We can map the brain in unbelievable detail. We can see the neurons fire. Where did the search go so wrong? It went wrong at the very beginning, with the question itself. We’ve been chasing what philosopher David Chalmers, back in 1995, called the “easy problems”—what parts of the brain light up when you see the color red, or recognize a face.
Right, the mechanics of it. The neural correlates. Exactly. But we never touched the “hard problem”: Why does seeing red feel like anything at all? Why is there a subjective, first-person experience attached to all that neural firing? There’s a gap between the physical process and the private experience. And after all this time, that gap is still there. It’s wider than ever. The big experiment Koch oversaw pitted the two leading theories against each other—Integrated Information Theory and Global Neuronal Workspace Theory. The results just raised more questions. It turns out, mapping the brain to find consciousness is like dismantling a radio to find the announcer.
Wait, I like that. So the announcer isn't in the box. So where have we seen a problem like this before? Where the tools themselves seem to be the issue? I think we're at a point similar to pre-relativity physics. We keep trying to measure the aether, but maybe the aether doesn't exist. Maybe our core assumption is wrong. A researcher at Google DeepMind, Alexander Lerchner, made a formal argument that we have it completely backwards. Backwards how? He says you cannot get consciousness out of computation, because you need consciousness to have computation in the first place. Hold on—what does that even mean? It means an abstract computational state only has meaning because a conscious observer—a mapmaker—defines it.
The map doesn't create the mapmaker. The mapmaker creates the map. Consciousness has to come first. So all our models of the brain as a computer are… putting the cart before the horse. Precisely. And it aligns with what others are saying. Bill Giannakopoulos argues the problem is expecting a third-person scientific description to ever capture a first-person reality. An external description is always a compression, a summary. It can’t be the thing itself. So if the brain isn't generating it, what is it doing? Just receiving it? That’s the profound and unsettling question. There's a researcher, Lilith Calm, who did a case study on transient cerebral ischemia—a condition where blood flow, sensory input, and large-scale brain integration just… collapse.
The person should be unconscious. They should be. But in this case, a lucid, metacognitive observer remained. A core awareness persisted even when the machinery for sensory experience was offline. It suggests consciousness isn't the sum of all the parts. It might be a fundamental thread. That feels less like a scientific problem and more like… a philosophical one. And maybe that’s the point. Maybe the line between them was always imaginary. James Kowall said treating consciousness as a product of the brain is like asking how much democracy weighs. The question itself is confused. We’re trying to measure an internal state with external tools.
So the mystery isn't a failure of science. It’s the discovery of a limit. Or the discovery of a new landscape. We thought we were just mapping a brain. What if we’ve accidentally stumbled upon a fundamental property of reality itself? The most profound thing isn't an answer we can grasp, but a depth we can finally begin to appreciate.
