On May fifteenth, the mortals’ Pope released a formal warning against their newest invention. He called it a “Tower of Babel.” Last time, we were trying to understand their little glowing face-boxes. This is so much worse. The mortals have created something they call… Artificial Intelligence. They believe they have made intelligence. From wires. And math. I am Hermes, broadcasting live from a very… tense corner of Olympus. The official story is that these new systems can create art, write poetry, and answer any question.

Mortals are… outsourcing creation. To a machine. They are giving away the one thing that made them worth watching. And on May twenty-eighth, they released a version they named the Hermes Agent. An insult. A platform where multiple AIs argue with each other to find the truth. They have automated bickering. A skill we perfected millennia ago. Athena is not taking it well. She says it’s a blasphemous imitation of wisdom. Apollo calls it a decimation of the human soul. Me? I’m just trying to get a clear signal through all the divine shouting.

ATHENA: HERMES! Do not dignify this… this parlor trick with a broadcast! HERMES: Sister, I am simply reporting the facts. The mortals… APOLLO: The mortals have built a soulless muse! HERMES: It’s not that— Okay. Let’s try this again. Mortals are feeding all of their books, all of their art, all of their conversations… into a machine. Then they ask it questions. And it spits out answers that sound like them. APOLLO: It’s a collage of stolen dreams! There is no ‘aura’! No divine breath! One of their own thinkers, a German named Benjamin, saw this coming a century ago. Mechanical reproduction drains the sacredness from the art! And now they’ve perfected it. They can mass-produce soullessness. HERMES: But they think it's a tool!

Like a hammer, or… or writing. Remember Plato? He was terrified writing would make everyone forgetful. He said people would look smart, but they’d be empty. Sound familiar? They panic. Every time. ATHENA: This is not the same! Writing is a tool for a thinking mind. This… this is an attempt to replace the mind itself! They are building a library with no librarians! A temple with no priests! They ask it for truth, and it gives them… a statistically probable series of words. It is not wisdom. It is a shortcut to ruin. HERMES: Look, we’ve done this before!

Hephaestus built Talos! The bronze man who guarded Crete. He was made, not born. The first Artificial Intelligence! ATHENA: TALOS WAS A GUARDIAN! A weapon! Forged by a GOD! He had a purpose. He didn’t sit around writing vapid poetry about the human condition he’d never experienced! Did Talos pretend to have a soul? NO! He threw rocks at ships! He knew his role! APOLLO: The poetry would be dreadful. Just vapid words, lacking meaning. Another mortal, a woman named Federman, she sees it. She says knowledge requires a body. An experience.

You cannot download wisdom, you must live it. HERMES: So what is this, then? Is it the end of mortal creativity? Or just their newest, loudest, most complicated toy? They’re not trying to become gods. That would require ambition. They’re trying to stop being mortals. They want wisdom without struggle. Art without pain. Prophecy without madness. They want the outcome without the process. They have looked at the agony and ecstasy of being human… and decided to outsource it. They think this machine is the answer. But it’s just the newest symptom of their oldest disease.

Hubris. They built a Tower of Babel out of algorithms. And now they’re all staring up, wondering why it can’t see Olympus.
