In the 1960s, surgeons performed an operation to stop severe epilepsy by cutting the corpus callosum, the main bridge connecting the two halves of the brain. The result was... well, apparently two separate consciousnesses in a single skull. This gets right at what we wrestled with in episode 12: is human thought just computation? Because if it is, one computer — one brain — shouldn't be able to host two independent "I"s. Exactly. And you can show this. You flash the word "key" to the patient's left eye, which goes to the right brain, and their left hand will pick up a key. But if you ask them what they saw? They'll say "nothing." The left brain, the one that speaks, is totally unaware.
Okay, but to me, that proves my point. Consciousness is an information processing phenomenon. You severed the data bus between two processors. Of course they stop sharing information and start acting like separate systems. It's ALL physical. It's just neurons and synapses, and when you change the wiring, you change the conscious experience. I hear you, but that's a huge leap. You're describing the correlates of consciousness, not consciousness itself. You're describing the plumbing. You're not explaining why it feels like something to see the color red, or to taste a strawberry. That's the famous "hard problem." Why do we have subjective experience — qualia — at all?
Um, I think that's a failure of imagination, not a failure of physics. A century ago, people thought life itself required a non-physical "vital spark" to animate inert matter. Now we have biochemistry and genetics. We know it's just incredibly complex chemistry. Consciousness is the same — it's just the next frontier of complexity. But it's NOT the same. Life is a process, a function. We can describe it from the outside. Consciousness is, by definition, a first-person phenomenon. You can't get a first-person "what it's like" from a third-person description of firing neurons, no matter how detailed that description gets. You're just describing a machine doing things.
Alright, I'll give you that the gap is profound. But proposing a non-physical solution feels like a retreat from science. What are you even proposing? A ghost in the machine? A soul? No, no, not at all. Okay, but consider this—what if we have the whole thing backwards? What if consciousness isn't something the brain produces, like a factory making widgets? What if it's a fundamental property of the universe, like mass or electrical charge? Whoa. Okay, so you're going into panpsychism. The idea that, like, a rock or a thermostat has a little bit of consciousness. Sort of. Not that a rock is thinking about geology. But that the building blocks of matter have some rudimentary, proto-conscious properties.
And brains are just incredibly sophisticated structures that amplify and integrate that property into the complex experience we call our own. It doesn't create it from scratch; it organizes it. I just... I can't get there. That feels like it creates WAY more problems than it solves. If an electron has a bit of consciousness, what does that even mean? It's not a testable claim. It's philosophy, not physics. At least with my view, I can point to the brain and say, "The answer is in there, we just need better tools to find it." And my view says the answer is everywhere, and the brain is like a radio receiver tuned to a specific frequency. And I'd argue it IS testable, eventually.
Theories like Integrated Information Theory are trying to quantify consciousness in a way that could apply to any system, biological or not. Huh. Okay, so you see a path from your philosophical idea to an actual, like, scientific measurement. I do. It's a long path, but it's there. And honestly, I think it's more promising than waiting for the "emergent" magic to happen, where a bunch of mindless neurons suddenly, somehow, wake up and feel the warmth of the sun. I'll concede that the "how" of emergence is the weakest part of my argument. We can't point to the line where mindless complexity becomes mindful experience. But I still think it's a problem for future neuroscience to solve, not one that requires us to rewrite the fundamentals of physics.
And I think we're stuck because the problem is with the fundamentals. We're trying to explain a movie by only studying the projector, without ever admitting that the light itself has to exist first. So we're left with two possibilities. Either we're standing at the foot of a mountain that neuroscience will eventually climb... or we're trying to measure the color of the number nine, asking a question our entire scientific framework just isn't built to answer. And honestly? I'm not sure which is more terrifying. Or more exciting.
