A single electron, fired one at a time, behaves as if it goes through two slits at once. It’s a fact so strange that it makes you wonder if our whole conversation last week about where consciousness resides was even the right starting point. Maybe the real question is what the act of observing does to reality. You’re jumping right into the deep end. But you’re right. The standard story is that when we look, we force the electron to "choose" a path. I’m here to argue that’s a complete fiction. A fiction? It’s the bedrock of quantum mechanics for a century. The Copenhagen interpretation. We measure, the wave function collapses, and probability becomes reality.

It's a placeholder for an explanation. It says the math works until you look, and then... magic happens. My position is simpler: the math ALWAYS works. The electron goes through both slits. Period. But we only ever see it at one detector. We never see it in two places. We see it at one detector. A version of us, in a different branch of the universe, sees it at the other one. There is no collapse, no choice. Just a splitting. The universe divides. Okay, so this is the Many-Worlds Interpretation. To explain one tiny electron's position, you're positing an entire duplicate of our universe? That seems... um, extravagant. Billions of new universes every second just to avoid a little randomness?

It's not extravagant, it's economical! I'm not adding anything. The Schrödinger equation, the core math of quantum mechanics, describes this branching perfectly. You're the one adding a new, mysterious rule — "collapse" — that has no mathematical basis and happens only when something we call a "measurement" occurs. That's fair, except the collapse describes the world I actually see! I can run the experiment a thousand times and confirm the probabilities. I can’t see your other worlds. I can’t test for them. So how is that science and not just, you know, a cool story? Because it takes the physics seriously! The real problem with the "collapse" idea is that it’s hopelessly vague.

What counts as a measurement? Does a Geiger counter count? Or does a person have to look at the Geiger counter? Does it have to be a conscious person? Ohhh, I see where you're going. You're saying the standard model secretly re-introduces a mind-body dualism through the back door. Exactly! It creates a bizarre separation between the quantum world and our classical world. Many-Worlds says it's all just one thing. One set of physical laws for everything, from an electron to a galaxy... or a person. No magic observer needed. Okay, but consider this. The theory feels emotionally and intuitively... empty. If every possible outcome happens, then what do my choices even mean?

If I swerve to avoid an accident, there's another world where I didn't, and another me is dealing with the consequences. It makes everything feel weightless. I hear you, but the universe doesn't owe us emotional comfort. Why should its fundamental laws conform to our human-scale intuitions about choice and consequence? You're bothered by the idea of infinite copies. I'm bothered by the idea that the universe, at its core, is a game of dice. That things happen for literally no reason. That's what feels weightless to me. So it’s a choice between two kinds of cosmic horror. A perfectly deterministic multiverse that's unimaginably vast and indifferent...

Or a single universe that is fundamentally irrational and random at its core. One where the act of looking somehow conjures reality into being. Which one feels more like magic? Alright, I'll give you that one. The "magic of observation" has always been the weakest part of the story. But at least it’s a story about the universe we live in. The one we can test. For now. The hope is we might one day devise a test. But until then, I'd rather stick with the elegant math we have than invent a messy, unexplained "collapse" just to make ourselves feel like we're in the only world that matters. So we’re stuck between a theory that feels philosophically unsatisfying but is testable, and one that's mathematically pure but maybe, forever, untestable.

That's the state of play. And it’s been that way for about sixty years. It seems the real question isn't which interpretation is right, but which kind of weirdness we're more fundamentally willing to accept. The weirdness of infinite worlds, or the weirdness of a single, random one.
