The overture begins at dawn on Monday's gray-lit stage A press release, a minor gaffe, a single, baffling page They've passed a bill to regulate the migratory geese By Tuesday, that's forgotten for a breach of someone's peace A senator gave a speech that lasted seven hours long To argue that the color red is technically not wrong We checked our notes, we scoured the news, we tried to understand It's just another ordinary week across the land! Oh, the lights go up on Washington, another mad review! We got the script this morning and we can't believe it's true! Is this a farce? A tragedy? A brand new, bizarre art? We're singing from the diaphragm but screaming from the heart!
Just smile and sell the headline with a desperate, jazzy hand! It's Friday's grand finale in this unbelievable land! A spokesperson went on television, smiling with their teeth And said the thing they said was false is now their new belief The polls went up, the polls went down, a chart was drawn in haste To show the nation's feelings on the flavor and the taste Of something no one's heard about, but everyone's enraged Another minor character has taken center stage! He's waving documents around, they're probably just blank While someone's getting sworn into a committee on a tank!
The stage directions call for chaos, but a choreographed kind A dance of righteous anger, leaving sanity behind The writers must be laughing, or they're crying in their beer They took the plot from last week and said 'let's get weirder here!' The understudy's quit the show, the tenor's lost his voice We're looking at each other, we don't think we have a choice! One more scene! One final note! Oh, the lights go up on Washington, it's our last big review!
We're begging you, dear audience, please tell us this ain't true! Is this a farce? A tragedy? A brand new, bizarre art? We're singing from the diaphragm but screaming from the heart! Just smile and sell the headline with a desperate, jazzy hand! It's Friday's grand finale in this unbelievable land! The curtain's falling, thank the stars, just let the curtain fall! ...Until we're back on Monday to do nothing, and do it all.
