the air on telegraph hill is different you can feel it shift as you climb the filbert street steps leaving the scent of bay water and sourdough behind for something older eucalyptus damp earth and secrets it's a change we felt last time too when the clang of a cable car bell seemed to ring on a frequency only memory could hear here the feeling is just as strong but quieter it clings to the art deco fluting of coit tower a pale column pointing a finger at a sky that's often just as gray for a young artist named lewis the tower wasn't a landmark it was a challenge he'd come to the city with a portfolio full of
sharp lines and bold colors but san francisco had answered with fog it muted everything softening the edges of his confidence he'd walk the city sketching but his drawings felt like ghosts so he came here to the top of the hill hoping the famous view would give him something definite to hold on to he passed the newly reopened julius castle on montgomery a fairy tale fortress clinging to the cliffside and felt a pang of something a story that was already finished he wanted to start one inside the tower's base he joined the slow circular migration of visitors gazing at the murals the famous public works of art project frescoes scenes of california life from the nineteen
thirties painted right into the wet plaster he saw orchards factories city streets and then he saw the children in a small fresco by an artist named ralph chesse a group of children play in a schoolyard it's a simple scene a ball a slide a few figures running but louis stopped he stared the artist in him saw the composition the masterful use of space but the man standing there in the fog of his own uncertainty saw something else he saw that the painted light in the mural was the only light in the room that seemed to have any warmth he leaned closer the laughter on the children's faces felt present as if the sound had just faded a moment ago he reached out his fingers hovering an inch from the wall half expecting to feel
the warmth of that painted sun and that's when a little girl in a blue dress a girl made of pigment and plaster for almost a hundred years turned her head her painted eyes which had been looking at a bouncing ball shifted they looked directly at him it was just for a second a heartbeat then she was looking back at the ball frozen in time once more but louis had seen it he hadn't imagined it a flicker of connection across ninety years he stumbled back not in fear but in absolute awe the color rushed back into his own world he didn't get a grand sweeping sketch of the bay that day he didn't capture the golden
gate bridge or alcatraz instead he went home and with a hand that no longer hesitated he drew a little girl in a blue dress she wasn't a ghost from a mural she was his secret a promise that in this city if you look closely enough the walls don't just have ears sometimes they have eyes and sometimes they look right back at you
