The silver locket was cold, tarnished, and shaped like a tear. It felt a world away from the sterile quiet we found at Gate B14. There, secrets were silent, held in the space between two people just waiting.
Here… they were for sale, laid out on velvet for anyone to find. The Sunday market was a beautiful kind of chaos. The air was thick with the smell of old paper, fried dough, and damp canvas.
I was just drifting, letting the crowd pull me from one stall to the next, when I saw it. Lying on a square of faded burgundy velvet, nestled between a brass compass and a handful of military pins.
It wasn't ornate. It wasn't valuable, not in the way most people mean. But it had a… gravity. A stillness in the middle of all this noise. I reached for it.
And so did she. Our fingers almost touched over the little silver tear. I pulled my hand back first. She didn't. Her hand hovered, then gently picked it up, the chain pooling in her palm.
She looked at me, and her eyes were the color of the sky just before a storm. “Sorry,” she said, but she didn’t sound sorry. She sounded… assessing.
“No, my fault,” I said. “It’s beautiful.” “Is it?” she asked. And it was a genuine question. Not a polite deflection. She was asking what I saw.
“It’s just an old locket.” “I guess I like things with a bit of a story,” I offered. A small, sad smile touched her lips. “Be careful what you wish for.” She held it for another moment, her thumb tracing the edge.
There was a story there, alright. And it wasn't a happy one. I could feel it radiating from her, a quiet hum of… something. Grief? Fear? She was here for this specific object.
Not browsing. Hunting. I felt a strange impulse to know. To push. “So, are you going to get it?” She looked from the locket back to me. The smile was gone.
“I don’t know.” She placed it back on the velvet, carefully, as if it were a sleeping bird. “Maybe it’s better left where it is.” And then the vendor, a man with a booming voice and a stained apron, saw our interest.
“Twenty bucks for the locket! Real silver, that one. A steal.” I reached for my wallet. It was an instinct. A way to break the tension, to own the story, maybe.
But her hand shot out and rested on my arm. Her fingers were cool, but her grip was firm. Urgent. “Don’t,” she whispered. And her voice had changed completely.
All the lightness was gone. “Please. It’s not for you.” I looked at her. Really looked at her. The storm was in her eyes now. “Why?” She leaned in, and the noise of the market just… faded away.
“Because the man who wore this,” she said, her voice barely audible, “spent his entire life making sure no one ever opened it.” I pulled my hand back from my pocket.
The twenty dollars felt meaningless. The locket on the velvet cloth no longer looked like a treasure. It looked like a lock. And she was its keeper.
I was just a stranger who had stumbled upon a door that was meant to stay closed, forever.
