The midnight train to Marseille clicks over the rails precisely three hundred and twelve times a minute. A different rhythm than the silence we found last week under that relentless sun. The carriage is dark, save for the two small reading lamps casting pools of amber light. In one, a man named Julian. In the other, a woman who calls herself Elara. Everyone else is asleep. The air smells of old velvet and rain. She holds a book in her lap.

Small, bound in dark red leather. Her knuckles are white where she grips it. She hasn’t turned a page in over an hour. Julian clears his throat. The sound is loud in the quiet car. “Going all the way to the coast?” he asks. I look up. His eyes are kind. Tired. “Something like that,” I say. My voice is steadier than I feel. He gestures to the book. “Looks old. Anything good?” My heart does a little stutter-step. “Just… family stories.” A lie.

It feels thin, even to me. I pull the book a little closer. He shouldn't be looking at it. He shouldn't be looking at ME. He just nods, but he sees it. The slight tremor in her hand. A tiny, fresh scar that peeks out from her hairline, pale against her skin. He sees the way her gaze keeps flicking toward the corridor, toward the conductor making his slow, deliberate rounds. She isn’t reading a book. She’s keeping watch. The train rocks.

A gentle sway, then a harder one. I feel the weight shift in my lap. My tired fingers, they just… slip. The book tumbles to the floor. It lands not with a soft thud, but with a sharp, hollow CLACK. And it falls open. For a single, stretched-out second, the light from Julian’s lamp illuminates the inside. No. The pages are a facade. They’ve been carved out, creating a hidden compartment. And inside, nestled on a bed of faded blue velvet… is a key.

Not just any key. It’s old. Ornate. Silver, tarnished with age. And opposite the key, glued to the inside cover, is a hand-drawn map. Lines and squares. A blueprint. She snatches it from the floor before he can get a better look. Her face is burning. The careful mask she’s worn for six hundred miles is GONE. She shoves the book—the box—into her bag and pulls the zipper shut. The sound is violent. He doesn’t speak. He doesn’t ask.

He just looks at me, then at the window, at our two faint reflections speeding through the French countryside. He slowly reaches down, picks up his own worn satchel, and places it on the empty seat between us. A barrier. A boundary. He saw. He knows. And now the secret isn't just hers anymore. It's a passenger in the seat between us. A third traveler, riding silently with us all the way to the sea.
