The Indian moon moth lives for only seven days. Tonight is its third. In the deep velvet of the garden, a cocoon that looked like a dried leaf shivers. From a silken seam, something new pushes its way into the world. Two antennae, delicate as ferns, taste the air. Then, the wings. Six inches across, pale green like sea glass, they unfurl slowly, still damp and crumpled from their long sleep. For an hour, the moth waits, clinging to its empty cradle, pumping fluid through the veins of its wings until they are smooth and strong.
The moon, a perfect white coin, climbs the sky. It is time. With a single, silent push, it launches into the night. The air is cool and thick with the smells of the sleeping world. It is not a frantic flight, not the busy darting of a bee. This is a drift. A slow dance on currents only it can feel. Its great, pale wings catch the moonlight, turning them from green to silver and back again. Below, the garden is a map of scents. It flies toward a wave of sweetness, a perfume so heavy it’s almost a taste.
Jasmine, spilling over a stone wall, its tiny white stars glowing in the dark. The moth doesn't land. It hovers, its wings a silent blur, just breathing in the fragrance. It has no mouth, no need to eat. Its only purpose is this journey. It floats over the dark mirror of a small pond, its own reflection a ghostly twin flying up to meet it. It passes the sharp, herbal scent of rosemary and the deep, sweet trumpet of a datura flower, which has opened its face only for the moon.
The world of the day is gone. The bright reds and yellows are just shades of grey now. But the night has its own colors… the silver of the moon, the deep blue of the shadows, the faint, phosphorescent glow of its own wings. A breeze rustles the leaves of a birch tree, a sound like gentle rain. This is its world. Quiet. Calm. Full of a beauty that daylight never gets to see. Then, a change. A subtle shift in the darkness. The deep indigo of the sky begins to soften at the eastern edge, a hint of violet, then a pale, watery blue.
The moon seems to fade. The air grows cooler still, and the first bird, a single, sleepy chirp, calls out. The night is ending. The moth feels the change, a deep, instinctual pull to find stillness. Its journey is over, for now. It drifts toward a large fern, its fronds heavy with dew. It finds the underside of a broad, green leaf, a hidden ceiling from the coming day. The moth lands, its tiny feet gripping the cool surface. It folds its magnificent wings together, the long, trailing tails hanging like ribbons.
The pale green of its wings is a perfect match for the leaf. It becomes invisible. Hidden from the sun, hidden from the busy world of the day, the moon moth rests, a silent, silver-green secret in the quiet heart of the garden.
