Catalog number seven-oh-four-B was a child's wooden spinning top, worn smooth by small hands. Last night we spoke of the gentle wonder found in quiet places.
This room is one of those places. The only sound is the whisper of a soft cloth on old wood. The air here is thick with the scent of beeswax and time.
Dust motes dance in the single beam of light from the high window, a slow, silent ballet. My work is simple.
I am the keeper of these things. The forgotten things. I take the top from its shelf, its surface covered in a fine, grey powder.
It’s not a treasure. It has no grand story of a kingdom won or lost. Its only history is in the shallow dents where it struck a floor, again and again.
A small chip near the point tells of a particularly enthusiastic spin. I dip the corner of the cloth into a small pot of polish.
The smell of lemon and oil rises, cutting through the quiet dust. As I work the polish into the wood, the grain emerges, dark and rich.
A constellation of tiny scratches appears. Each one a memory. Each one a moment of laughter or frustration for a child I will never know.
And sometimes I wonder… what is the point of this? To keep an object that has outlived its own memory. To polish a toy that will never spin again.
The world outside is loud, and fast, and always making new things. And in here… there is only the slow, patient process of decay, which I try to hold at bay for just a little longer.
And then, as I turn the top over in my palm… I see it. It’s so faint I almost miss it. Scratched into the base with a pin or a nail… is a single letter.
An 'A'. And just like that, everything changes. It is no longer an anonymous toy. It belonged to ‘A’. ‘A’ who held it just so.
‘A’ who perhaps carved their initial in a secret moment of ownership, claiming this small wooden thing as their own.
The top is no longer silent. It is whispering a name, even if I can’t hear the rest of the story. I finish polishing it, the wood now holding a deep, soft glow.
A warmth seems to radiate from it, the ghost of a small, clutching hand. My work isn’t to fight against forgetting.
I see that now. It is to listen. To offer a moment of quiet attention. To witness the simple, profound fact that something—that someone—was here.
I place the top back on its velvet-lined shelf, next to a tarnished silver locket and a single, child-sized glove.
They are not lost. They are just… quiet. And the dust that settles here is not a shroud, but a soft blanket, tucking a sleeping world into bed.
