The shadow of a single cloud stretches, long and thin, like a brushstroke of cool gray across a sun-warmed hill. Last night we drifted toward quiet worlds on the edge of sleep, and tonight...
we find the one who paints their borders. They are called the Weaver. Or perhaps they have no name. They sit on a seat carved from twilight, a place that is neither here nor there, and they watch the day begin to close.
From this high, unseen vantage, the world below is a tapestry of greens and golds, still humming with the last warmth of the sun.
And the Weaver’s work is about to begin. They don’t use a loom, or thread. Their fingers barely move. It’s more a tilt of the head… a gentle lean… a thought, sent out on the evening breeze.
A long, wispy cloud answers, drifting slowly eastward. Its shadow glides over a sleeping meadow, hushing the bright colors of the wildflowers, turning them a soft, uniform purple.
The Weaver guides another shadow, this one broader, softer at the edges, and lets it settle over the rooftops of a small town.
One by one, lights begin to appear in the windows below, tiny pinpricks of gold in the growing dusk. The work is unhurried. There is no rush.
Each shadow finds its place, draping itself over a forest, a riverbend, a lonely road… blanketing the world in quiet. And then, the Weaver notices something.
A small cluster of trees on a faraway ridge. In the highest branches, a family of birds is settling for the night. A final few chirps, a rustle of feathers.
The Weaver smiles, a very small, slow smile. With the most delicate intention, they summon a small, perfectly shaped cloud… like a puff of spun silver.
They guide its shadow to fall just so… not on the whole ridge, but only on that one cluster of trees. A tiny, personal blanket of shade.
A final, gentle tucking-in, just for them. The rustling stops. The world beneath that one small shadow is still. Slowly, as the last edge of the sun dips below the horizon, the Weaver’s work is done.
The individual shadows have all merged, melting into the deep, velvet blue of the night. The day’s sharp edges are gone. The Weaver leans back, feeling the deep, quiet satisfaction of it all.
The world is now a soft, breathing darkness, ready for rest. And in the quiet that follows, the whole world breathes out… a long, slow sigh… ready for its dreams.
