The average person touches their phone two thousand, six hundred, and seventeen times a day. In our last episode, we discussed why the direct pursuit of happiness is so often a dead end. The Stoics understood that a good life isn't something you chase; it's a fortress you build, brick by brick, through your daily choices. And the foundation of that fortress is a virtue we rarely talk about today: Temperance. Now, the word itself sounds unpleasant. It brings to mind deprivation, austerity, a life of saying "no." But that’s a misunderstanding. The Stoics didn't see Temperance as punishment.
They saw it as intelligent self-management. It’s not about wanting fewer things; it’s about wanting the right things. It is the skill of distinguishing between a destructive impulse and a healthy desire. It's the ability to say "no" to the immediate, fleeting pleasure in order to say "yes" to long-term peace and strength. In a world designed to hijack your attention and monetize your impulses, Temperance is not a limitation. It is a SUPERPOWER. So, how do we practice this in a world that offers endless temptation on a glowing screen? Let's get practical. Here are three strategies that actually work.
First, reclaim the edges of your day. For one week, try this: no screens for the first thirty minutes after you wake up, and no screens for the last thirty minutes before you go to sleep. This creates a buffer zone. It prevents your first thoughts from being shaped by an algorithm and your last thoughts from being agitated by digital noise. You are taking back control of your own mind when it is most impressionable. Second, for consumption—whether it's food, shopping, or information—introduce a simple pause. Before you eat that snack, buy that item, or click that link, ask yourself one question: "What is this really for?" Am I hungry, or am I bored?
Do I need this, or do I just want a distraction? You don't even have to deny yourself. The goal is simply to bring AWARENESS to the act. To make a conscious choice instead of running on autopilot. Third, and this is the most difficult: emotional temperance. When you feel a hot surge of anger, or a cold spike of anxiety, the practice is to create a circuit breaker. Just one deep breath. That’s it. Before you react, before you type the angry comment, before you lash out… breathe. In that one moment of intentional pause, you create a space between the stimulus and your response.
And in that space, freedom lives. This is the real point. The modern world tells you that freedom is the ability to satisfy every craving. But that is the definition of addiction, not freedom. Being pulled around by every notification, every desire, every emotional flare-up… that is a kind of prison. Stoic Temperance offers a different kind of liberty. The freedom from your own worst impulses. It's the quiet power of being the one who decides. It is not a cage you build around yourself. It is the key that unlocks the door. Next time, we will see how this internal self-mastery becomes the basis for how we treat others.
We will discuss the Stoic virtue of Justice. True strength isn't just about controlling yourself; it's about using that control to contribute to the world.
