Neuroscientists estimate that up to ninety-five percent of your brain activity happens outside of your conscious awareness. In our last episode, we talked about the Stoic goal of living in accordance with nature—embracing reality as it is. Well, the brutal reality is, most of what you do, think, and feel today will be run by a machine you don't control. This is the bedrock of Stoic practice. It’s not about gritting your teeth and enduring. It's about recognizing what little you actually have command over. Epictetus gave it a name: Prohairesis.
It’s your faculty of moral choice. It is not your body, not your job, not your reputation. It is the one and only thing that is truly, one hundred percent ‘up to you.’ It’s the part of you that looks at an impulse, an impression, or an event, and chooses whether to assent to it. To agree with it. To act on it. This is your inner citadel. And most of us leave the gates wide open. Let's make this concrete. A notification appears on your phone. A stranger on social media has called your carefully considered opinion "idiotic." You feel a jolt of anger, your heart speeds up, your thumbs are already typing a defensive reply.
Stop. Right there. You just surrendered your Prohairesis. You handed over your inner peace, your focus, and your time to a random string of text from a person you'll never meet. Reclaiming your power isn't about winning the argument. It's about seeing the impression for what it is: "An opinion from a stranger, likely designed to provoke." And then, you choose. You choose not to assent. You choose to judge that this is not worthy of your emotional energy. You close the app. The citadel is secure. Here’s another. You're in a team meeting. Your boss is praising the successful launch of the Miller Project.
It was your work, your late nights. And your boss gives all the credit to your colleague, David. The hot flush of injustice, the internal monologue about how unfair this company is, the resentment toward David… this is the autopilot. You've allowed an external event—your boss’s mistake—to dictate your internal state. Exercising your Prohairesis means you separate the event from your judgment of it. The event is: "My contribution was not acknowledged." That is a fact. It is not in your control. Your judgment is what matters. You can choose the response: "This is an opportunity to practice magnanimity," or, "I will schedule a calm, private meeting with my boss to clarify my role." You choose to act with virtue, not reactivity.
You protect your own character, even when someone else fails to acknowledge it. The real battlefield for your freedom isn't out in the world. It’s that tiny space between a stimulus and your response. That is the only territory you will ever fully own. Everything else—your health, your wealth, the people you love—can be threatened or taken away by fortune. But your ability to choose who you are in the face of that fortune… that is yours alone. We spend our lives trying to control the storm, when our only real power is in steering the rudder of our own soul.
We've now identified the one thing that is truly ours. The core of our agency. But what happens when the assault on the citadel comes not from a petty insult or a workplace slight, but from a devastating internal force, like profound grief? That is where we go next.
