When a group of fifth graders were praised for being smart, ninety percent of them chose an easier task next. That one fact comes from the research of Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, and it’s the key to unlocking why some people thrive and others... don’t. Last week we dug into the mechanics of deep work and habit building, but this—this is the operating system that runs underneath all of it. You can have the best systems in the world, but if your core belief is that you can't change, you won't. So Dweck’s entire life's work boils down to this one powerful idea she calls 'Mindset.' And there are only two.
The first is a fixed mindset. This is the belief that your intelligence, your personality, your talent—it's all carved in stone. You've got a certain amount, and that's your lot in life. Every situation, every task, becomes a test: Do I have enough? Am I smart enough? Am I a success or a failure? There's no in-between. It’s a pretty high-stakes way to live. Then there’s the other option: a growth mindset. This is the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Sure, people differ in their initial talents and aptitudes, but everyone can change and grow through application and experience.
It’s the difference between seeing your brain as a statue and seeing it as a muscle. One is finished. The other gets stronger with use. And this one little shift in perspective changes… well, everything. People with a growth mindset embrace challenges. They see them as an opportunity to grow, not a chance to fail and be judged. Setbacks? For a fixed mindset, a setback is devastating. It's proof you're not good enough. For a growth mindset, a setback is just… data. It’s information about what to try next. It’s a sign you need to put in more effort or try a different strategy. And effort is the big one.
The fixed mindset says if you have to try hard, you must not be smart. The talent should just… flow. The growth mindset sees effort as the path to mastery. It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s the very thing that makes you better. It’s the same with criticism. Instead of ignoring it or getting defensive, you can actually learn from it. Instead of feeling threatened by the success of others, you can find lessons and inspiration. So what’s the point of all this? Here’s the turn. This isn’t about your personality. It’s a belief. And beliefs can be changed. You aren't "a fixed mindset person." You just might be in a fixed mindset right now.
And you can shift. So here are two things—just two—to try this week to start building that muscle. First, just start noticing the fixed-mindset voice in your head. That voice that says, “I’m just not a math person,” or “I could never run a marathon,” or “What if I try and look stupid?” Don’t argue with it. Don’t judge it. Just… hear it. Label it. Say to yourself, "Ah, there's my fixed mindset talking." That's step one. Awareness. Second, and this is my favorite, add the word "yet." It's so simple it feels silly, but it works. "I don't understand this." Becomes, "I don't understand this… yet." "I'm not good at this." Becomes, "I'm not good at this… yet." That one little word opens the door from a dead end to a path forward.
It implies that with more time, more strategy, more effort, you can get there. This isn’t about just thinking positively. This is about understanding that struggle isn’t a sign you’re failing. Struggle is the sign that you’re learning. The most profound idea here isn't just that you can improve. It's that believing you can improve is the thing that actually makes the improvement happen.
