SpaceX just bought an AI coding assistant called Cursor for sixty billion dollars. Sixty. Billion. The startup was founded by an Indian, Aman Sanger, and a Pakistani, Sualeh Asif—and that all-stock deal just made them both billionaires overnight. In our last episode, we talked about big funding and bold moves in Indian tech. Well, this is about as bold as it gets. But that wasn't the only move today. Back on the ground here in India, the AI money printer is also working overtime. Sarvam AI just raised two hundred and thirty-four million dollars, pushing its valuation to one-point-five billion. The round is on its way to three hundred million, and HCLTech just put in a massive strategic check. We'll come back to that. Meanwhile, one of the longest-running dramas in edtech is finally over.
Byju's and Manipal are officially sealing a settlement over the Aakash acquisition. That whole high-profile mess is finally getting cleaned up ahead of a major court hearing. And in the world of ten-minute deliveries, Zepto just made a hard pivot. The quick-commerce giant is now aggressively pushing for profitability—a crystal clear signal they're getting their books in order for an IPO. Finally, Reliance Jio is going deeper on AI. Akash Ambani just announced JioBharatIQ, a new platform built to support twenty-two different Indian languages. The goal is to democratize AI, taking it beyond just the English-speaking elite. Okay, let's go back to that Sarvam AI deal. Because the two hundred thirty-four million dollar number?
That's not the most important part. The part that really matters is who led the round: HCLTech. A legacy IT services giant just put one hundred and fifty million dollars of its own cash directly into a homegrown AI startup. This isn't just venture capital anymore. This is strategic. HCLTech isn't just betting on a financial return; they're buying a front-row seat to the future of Indian AI. Sarvam is building foundational models… for India. They’re not trying to be another OpenAI clone for the West. They're building for the unique data, the languages, the context of this market. And that's a game-changer. But this firehose of cash is creating a massive problem. Or, a massive opportunity, depending on where you sit. The AI talent market is absolutely exploding.
Companies are in a hiring frenzy for engineering, for product, for anyone who can actually build this stuff. And that means compensation is going vertical, especially for leadership roles. There's a genuine, acute talent shortage. So you have all this capital pouring in, hundreds of millions of dollars, but the bottleneck isn't money anymore. It's people. It's the engineers who can make these large-scale deployments of generative AI actually work. This is the new battleground for every founder and every CEO in the country. It reframes what's happening in the entire deep-tech space. You have investors like Celesta Capital's Sriram Viswanathan saying they won't back chip fabs—it takes too long, costs billions, maybe a decade to see a return.
But they are pouring money into AI and space tech. Why? Because that's where India can compete now. It can sell satellite services and AI platforms to the global south and other markets that US giants are too busy to serve. The talent war we're seeing today isn't a bug. It's a feature. It's the sound of that strategy finally paying off. So when you look at the landscape today, the headline isn't just "more money for AI." It's a fundamental shift. The capital is getting smarter, more strategic. It's legacy tech partnering with the new guard to build something entirely new. And the biggest challenge for India's tech ecosystem just changed. It's no longer about finding the money. It's about finding the minds to spend it.
