Elevation Capital just dropped half a billion dollars on a new fund for early-stage Indian AI startups. In last week's episode, we talked about the Indian Army looking to startups for AI drones, and this new fund from Elevation is pouring gasoline on exactly that fire — betting big on deep tech and defence. This isn't just another fund; it's a major signal about where the smart money believes the next decade of Indian tech is heading. So, here's what else is moving today. That half-a-billion-dollar fund is part of a much bigger story: Indian AI startups have now raised over one BILLION dollars just in the first half of 2026. Venture capitalists are officially doubling down. And you can see why.

Take Apurva Shrivastava, an MIT alum whose AI startup, Avoca, just hit a one billion dollar valuation. His company uses AI to make sure home service businesses never miss a customer call. It's a simple problem he saw in his own family's business, now scaled into a unicorn. But while the money is pouring in, the risks are scaling right alongside it. India's top cybersecurity chief, Sanjay Bahl at CERT-In, just put out a stark warning. He says AI is making phishing attacks so sophisticated that even tech-savvy people are getting fooled. The threat landscape is changing, fast. Okay, let's go back to that Elevation Capital fund, because this is the story that really defines the moment. Five hundred million dollars is a huge number, but the details are what matter.

This brings Elevation's total India-focused capital to nine hundred million dollars, making it the second-largest dedicated VC pot in the country. Only Peak XV Partners has more. And they are specifically targeting seed and Series A rounds. That means they aren't buying into mature companies; they are writing the first, most crucial checks for founders with an idea and not much else. They're betting on the absolute frontier. Here's the thesis, and it's sharp. One of the partners, Mukul Arora, basically said that India has spent the last decade building the pipes — the connectivity, the digital payments infrastructure. Now, AI is about to pump something new through those pipes: expertise.

Think AI-driven tutors, financial advisors, or healthcare diagnostics, delivered at massive scale. The pipes are there, but the expertise has been in short supply. AI is the thing that closes that gap. And it’s not just software. They’re explicitly going after deep tech — space, defence, robotics, energy. Another partner, Mridul Arora, pointed out something we touched on last week: the Indian government is suddenly way more open to buying from startups, especially in defence. If you have the best product, you can win the contract. That’s a fundamental shift. For years, a startup trying to sell to the government was a non-starter. Now — now it's a core part of a major VC's investment strategy.

This isn't just about finding the next great app. This is about funding the companies that will build India's industrial and strategic future. So when you put it all together, the money, the government's new stance, the talent... it feels like a different kind of game is starting. The argument that India was lagging in the global AI race is starting to look really dated. What we're seeing now is a country getting ready to play to its unique strengths. This isn't just another funding cycle. It’s a deliberate, well-funded pivot from building on top of existing platforms to creating the foundational technologies themselves.
