Skyroot Aerospace just launched Vikram-1, India’s first-ever privately built orbital rocket. In yesterday's episode, we were all about the funding frenzy and big AI moves, but this... this is different. This is hardware breaking gravity. A private company, not a government agency, just put a rocket into orbit from Indian soil. Everything else today is happening in the shadow of that launch. So here's the rest of the landscape. Travis Kalanick — yes, the Uber co-founder — his new robotics firm Atoms just pulled in a staggering one-point-seven BILLION dollars. Andreessen Horowitz led the round. They're going after automation in mining, transport, and food production. On the chip front, AI hardware startup Etched raised three hundred million dollars, pushing its valuation over ten billion.

The demand for their AI inference chips is apparently exploding. And speaking of AI, the Indian government just went all-in, officially backing twenty different homegrown, sovereign AI models. We're talking large language models from Sarvam AI, multilingual models from BharatGen... a whole portfolio to reduce reliance on foreign tech. Five are already out. And looking a little further out, IBM is now confirmed to be setting up one of India’s first quantum computers in Amaravati, with a target of September this year. Finally, ServiceNow dropped forty million dollars into an Indian AI startup called Businessnext, aiming to build autonomous banking solutions for the Asia Pacific region.

Okay, let's go back to that rocket. Because the Vikram-1 launch is so much more than just a successful mission. For years, the Indian tech story has been a software story. Code, services, platforms. What Skyroot did yesterday, with Mission Aagaman, is prove that India's private sector can now compete in deep, hard, capital-intensive tech. This wasn't a sub-orbital hop. This was an ORBITAL rocket. It changes the entire calculus for what's possible. And you can see the shift in who's writing the checks. It's not just venture capitalists anymore. We're talking about industrial giants like Lakshmi Mittal and even legacy brands like Haldiram's putting money into space tech. They see what's happening.

A new industrial category just opened for business in India, and it happened overnight. But the other tectonic shift is happening in AI, and it’s a battle being fought on two fronts. You have to look at the Etched funding and the government's sovereign AI plan as two sides of the same coin. On one hand, you have the private market anointing Etched as a potential domestic challenger to Nvidia. A ten-point-three billion dollar valuation isn't just hype; it's a massive bet that India can build the foundational HARDWARE for the AI revolution. Sequoia doesn't lead a three-hundred-million-dollar round unless they think they've found something that can scale globally. So that's the hardware play.

Then, on the other hand, you have the government's push for twenty sovereign AI models. This is the SOFTWARE and intelligence layer. This isn't just a research project. It’s a strategic declaration of independence. The government is saying, we cannot have our digital future, our data, and our public services running exclusively on models built in San Francisco or Beijing. By funding everything from Sarvam AI's huge parameter models to Gnani.AI's speech-to-speech systems, they're trying to build a diversified, homegrown AI stack. So think about that. India is simultaneously trying to build its own Nvidia with private capital, and its own OpenAI with public backing. Why? Because it has concluded that being a mere consumer of foreign AI is a massive strategic vulnerability.

It’s one thing to build an app that changes how you order food. It's another thing entirely to build the rocket that puts the satellite in orbit and the chip that powers the AI that runs the whole system. That's what's different today.
