India's first indigenous AI inference chip is officially on the clock, targeted for production by 2029. In our last episode, we talked about the billion-dollar valuations driving India's tech surge, and today we're seeing the government put serious capital behind the hardware to power it all. This isn't just a research project anymore; the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, or C-DAC, has already picked HCL to validate the design. Now, for the rest of what's moving. First, funding for AI-driven cybersecurity startups has nearly doubled. We're talking eighty-nine million dollars in the first half of 2026, up from forty-seven million last year. This isn't a surprise if you've been watching the news. After the recent high-profile data leaks at places like Tata Electronics and even a nuclear power plant, companies are realizing they need AI to fight AI-powered attacks.

As one founder put it, the attack surface is just expanding too fast. Next, in the manufacturing space, automation startup Groyyo just raised nine-point-three million dollars. This round, led by Cornerstone Ventures, is all about taking their AI platform for apparel manufacturing and expanding it geographically. They're betting that automating the supplier network is the next big efficiency leap. And finally, the big picture shows a major split in the market. While overall startup funding in India actually dropped nine percent this past fiscal year, AI-native companies are absolutely soaring. Startups like Emergent and Sarvam AI just hit unicorn status with huge funding rounds. So if you're not in AI, you're feeling a chill.

If you are... it's a gold rush. Okay, let's go back to that chip story, because it's part of something much, much bigger. The project is a piece of the new Semicon 2.0 mission, which the cabinet just approved. And the headline number is one-point-two-seven TRILLION rupees. That's the fund to build out India's entire semiconductor ecosystem—from factories to design firms to research. But here's the part that really changes the game. It's not just about grants and incentives. Buried in the plan is a radical new strategy for funding startups in this space. The government has decided to act like a venture capitalist. For eligible chip design startups, the government will now MATCH private investment... in exchange for EQUITY. Think about that for a second.

This isn't a loan. This isn't a subsidy. This is the government taking a direct ownership stake in early-stage, high-risk tech companies. Why? Because building chips is brutally expensive. The capital required has been a massive barrier for Indian startups trying to compete globally. This move is designed to plug that exact gap, to de-risk it for private VCs and get these critical companies off the ground. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was clear about the goal here. He said this is about developing India-owned semiconductor intellectual properties. The phrase he used was unlocking "greater independence and worth in the global value chain." This isn't just about assembling phones anymore. It's about owning the patents for the brains inside them.

It's a fundamental shift from being a customer to being an OWNER. And having the government on your cap table from day one... well, that changes the entire dynamic of building a company in this sector. So while C-DAC forges ahead on the national AI chip, the government is simultaneously trying to seed an entire forest of private companies to do the same. It's a two-pronged strategy: one state-led moonshot, and one state-funded ecosystem. This is the government deciding it can't just wait for the market. It's stepping in to build the market itself.
