In 1851, Elias Howe—the inventor of the sewing machine—patented something he called an "Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure," and then did absolutely nothing with it. This feels a lot like our deep dive on the ballpoint pen, where the perfect solution was just sitting there, ignored. Ignored because he was busy with the sewing machine! He couldn't see the second forest for the first tree. But the real failure came forty-two years later with a man named Whitcomb Judson. He marketed a "Clasp Locker" for boots. It was a disaster. It used a clumsy hook-and-eye system that would randomly pop open. So the first zipper didn't... zip. Not at all. It was a party trick that embarrassed you at the party.

The company was bleeding money until they hired a Swedish-American electrical engineer named Gideon Sundback. And this is where the obsession pays off. Sundback looked at Judson's mess and rebuilt it from first principles. What was the core problem he had to solve? The teeth. Judson’s hooks were unreliable. Sundback’s breakthrough, his "Hookless No. 2" from 1913, was to change the shape of the teeth themselves. Instead of a hook and an eye, he designed each tooth with a tiny scoop on its head and a little dimple on its bottom. Wait, a scoop and a dimple? Exactly. The Y-shaped slider forces the scoop of one tooth to clamp perfectly onto the dimple of the tooth on the opposite side.

It's a beautiful, self-correcting geometry. That simple change is everything. This feels like the adoption of the automobile. You have these early, terrible, unreliable versions that barely work, and then suddenly Henry Ford creates the Model T and it just... goes. Sundback is the Henry Ford of fasteners. That's the perfect analogy. And it holds! Because just like the car, nobody wanted it at first. For twenty years, it was seen as a novelty. It took B.F. Goodrich putting them on rubber boots in the 1920s—and coining the onomatopoeia "zipper"—for it to catch on. Then Esquire magazine runs a "Battle of the Fly" campaign in 1937, pushing zippers over buttons for men's trousers.

The "Battle of the Fly." I can't believe that was real. But here’s where the analogy breaks. The car changed public space—how we move between cities. The zipper changed private space. It introduced speed and ease to the act of dressing and undressing. It changed our relationship with our own bodies. It’s a mechanism for privacy, but also for access. Yes! From military flight suits in World War Two to a child learning to put on their own coat. The sound of a zipper is now a universal signal. It's the sound of something either being revealed or secured.
