The modern corkscrew began its life as a tool for clearing unspent charges from a musket barrel. Last week we explored the strange science behind everyday things like the humble eraser, and this week... well, this week we're looking at an object that also has a surprisingly violent origin story. It seems the most peaceful household tools often start out with a different purpose entirely. We're talking about the corkscrew. And to understand it, you have to understand the problem it was built to solve. A problem that, for a while, had no good solution. For most of history, wine wasn't really aged. It was stored in barrels, or amphorae, and you drank it relatively young.

It was perishable. The idea of laying down a bottle of wine for ten, twenty, fifty years... that was impossible. The technology simply wasn't there. Then, in the seventeenth century, two things happened that changed everything: the mass production of stronger, more uniform glass bottles, and the popularization of the cork stopper, mostly from the cider-making traditions in England. Suddenly, you could seal a bottle of wine. TRULY seal it. Airtight. This meant it could be stored, transported, and most importantly, aged. As the wine historian Hugh Johnson said, the invention of the cork was "the most important event in the history of fine wine." But it created a new, and deeply frustrating, problem.

How do you get the cork out? Journalist George Taber described the situation perfectly. He said for decades, there were only two ways to remove a cork, and both of them were bad. Option one: you leave a bit of the cork sticking out of the bottle. But that compromises the seal, defeating the whole purpose of aging the wine. Option two: you push the cork all the way in, flush with the top of the bottle, to get a perfect seal. But then... you have to break the neck of the bottle to get the wine out. Not exactly an elegant solution for dinner. So for a time, that was the choice. Spoil the wine, or smash the bottle. The first hint of a solution came from the battlefield.

Since at least the early 1630s, soldiers had a tool called a "gun worm." It was a simple, single or double-spiraled piece of metal on a rod. If a musket charge failed to fire, you’d screw the gun worm into the lead ball and wad of cloth and pull the whole thing out. It was a bullet extractor. And sometime in the mid-1600s, someone... we don't know who... looked at a stubbornly sealed bottle of cider or wine, and then looked at their gun worm, and had an idea. The first written reference we have is from 1681, in England. It describes a "steel worm used for the drawing of Corks out of Bottles." It wasn't called a corkscrew yet.

It was just a "steel worm." And for about a hundred years, that's what people used. A crude, often clumsy tool, repurposed from military life. It worked. Sort of. It often tore the cork to pieces, or you’d screw it in too far and break the bottom of the cork, leaving most of it stuck in the neck. The tool was a clever adaptation, but it wasn't a true invention. Not yet. The first person to really think about the physics of removing a cork was an English clergyman. His name was Reverend Samuel Henshall, and in 1795, he was granted the world's first patent for a corkscrew. Now, corkscrews were already in use, so he didn't invent the concept.

What he invented was a refinement. A crucial one. Henshall's design was a simple T-shape, like we know, but he added a small, concave metal disk just above the start of the spiral worm. This little disk is now called the "Henshall button." And here's the genius of it. As you twist the screw into the cork, the button presses down on the top of the cork. This slight compression stops the cork from tearing apart. It also prevents you from screwing the worm in too deep and breaking through the bottom. It was the first piece of design that treated the cork not as an enemy to be ripped out, but as a partner in the process.

It made the extraction cleaner, more reliable. It was the moment the corkscrew stopped being just a repurposed gun tool and became a dedicated piece of engineering. But it still required a lot of brute force. You had to pull, and pull HARD, straight up. The next great leap wouldn't come for almost another century. And it would come from Germany. In 1882, an inventor named Carl Wienke patented a design that introduced a simple, beautiful concept: leverage. His design was a folding corkscrew. It had the familiar worm, but it also had a hinged, two-step lever that you could rest on the lip of the bottle. You’d screw the worm in a little, hook the first step of the lever onto the bottle's rim, and pull up.

The lever acted as a fulcrum, multiplying your force. It lifted the cork halfway out. Then you’d use the second, longer step on the lever to pull it the rest of the way. It was brilliant. It required a fraction of the effort. It was compact, it was efficient, and it was elegant. Wienke's design became known as the "waiter's friend." And that other name it goes by, the "wine key"? That's believed to be a simple mispronunciation of his last name... Wienke. Not because it's the "key" to the wine. Because of Carl Wienke. This design, from 1882, is functionally identical to the wine key that nearly every sommelier and waiter in the world uses today.

Think about that. With all our modern manufacturing and materials science... the best solution we have is still a 140-year-old German patent. Of course, there were other variations. The winged corkscrew, the one with the two arms that rise up as you twist the handle, was patented just two years before Wienke's, in 1880. It uses a rack-and-pinion system. It's maybe a little easier for home use, but it's clunky. Less efficient. There are mounted corkscrews for bars, and now, of course, electric ones that do all the work for you with the press of a button. But the professional standard remains the waiter's friend. Wienke’s design.

So I've been sitting with this story for a few days. And the question I keep coming back to is... what historical moment does this most resemble? Where does the analogy hold? And I think the best analogy for the invention of the corkscrew... is the invention of the printing press. Stay with me here. The printing press didn't invent the book. Books existed for centuries before Gutenberg. They were handwritten by scribes. They were precious, rare, and incredibly slow to produce. The knowledge was there, but it was locked away. Inaccessible. The printing press, with its movable type, was the key that unlocked it. It made information scalable, distributable, and preservable in a way that was previously unimaginable.

The corkscrew did the same thing for wine. It didn't invent wine. It didn't even invent the bottle or the cork. But it solved the final, crucial bottleneck in the system. It unlocked the potential of the bottle and the cork. Before a reliable corkscrew, aging wine was a gamble. A happy accident. You could seal it, but you couldn't be sure you could open it cleanly. It was a technology with a missing user interface. The corkscrew—specifically the refined, leveraged designs of Henshall and Wienke—was the user interface. It made the process of opening an aged bottle reliable and elegant. It turned the act of accessing aged wine from a destructive chore into a ceremony.

And by doing so, it solidified the very idea of collecting and aging wine. It allowed wine to become a vessel for TIME itself. A bottle of wine from a specific year and place became a piece of history you could open and experience. Without the corkscrew, the culture of fine wine as we know it... simply could not exist. It would be a niche, frustrating hobby for people who didn't mind smashing bottles. So where does the analogy break? Well, the printing press democratized knowledge for the masses. The corkscrew, at least initially, enabled a luxury good. It was a tool for the wealthy who could afford to lay down cellars of fine claret.

So the scale of impact is obviously different. But over time, as wine itself became more accessible, the corkscrew followed. That simple, beautiful waiter's friend, Wienke's design, is not an expensive tool. It's a perfectly democratic piece of engineering. The most effective design is also one of the most affordable. And so we're left with this quiet, elegant object. A spiral of steel born from a tool of war. A device that solved a puzzle of physics and, in doing so, unlocked an entire culture of taste, patience, and history. It's a reminder that sometimes the most profound innovations aren't the ones that create something entirely new, but the ones that perfect the final, missing step.

The ones that provide the key—or in this case, the Wienke—to something we already had.
