The oldest known button, from 2800 BCE, was made from a curved seashell and couldn't fasten a thing. It was found in the Indus Valley, what is now Pakistan, and it was pure ornament, a tiny piece of flair sewn onto a garment for status, not for structure. For thousands of years, that’s all a button was: jewelry that just happened to be attached to your clothes. The simple object that holds your shirt together today started its life as functionally useless. And I’ve been sitting with that idea. That for most of its history, the button did nothing. We had clothes, of course. We used pins, brooches called fibulae, and we laced things up with leather thongs and cords.
Clothes were draped and held, not tailored and closed. And that worked. It worked for the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, for millennia. So what changed? Why did we need the button to suddenly start… working? The answer isn't the button itself. It's the hole. Sometime in the 13th century, in Germany, the buttonhole appeared. And this seemingly tiny innovation set off a revolution. For the first time, you could have a garment that fit the human form snugly. Tightly. Before the buttonhole, you could only get that kind of fit with extensive, time-consuming lacing. But with a row of buttons and holes, a tunic could be closed from neck to waist in seconds.
And this changed the silhouette of humanity. It was mostly for men at first. It created a new masculine ideal—a tailored, form-fitting look that emphasized the chest and waist. It was a peacocking move. Having a shirt with dozens of buttons meant you could afford the buttons, yes, but more importantly, you could afford the tailor and the sheer amount of fabric required for this new, fitted style. Some of the first laws regulating clothing—sumptuary laws—were actually about who was allowed to wear buttons. King Francis the First of France had a single velvet gown that was decorated with thirteen thousand, six hundred gold buttons.
They were a status symbol you wore, quite literally, on your sleeve. The materials were part of that status. The wealthy had buttons of gold, silver, and pewter. Or ivory, hand-carved bone, and precious stones. For everyone else… well, you might have a few simple buttons made of wood or cheaper animal horn, but you were mostly still lacing things up. The button was a class divide made manifest. It was a technology of fit, and therefore, a technology of fashion. And for about five hundred years, that’s where it stayed: a handcrafted object, a piece of jewelry with a job. Then came the armies. And armies need one thing above all else: uniformity.
When you're trying to outfit tens of thousands of soldiers, you can't be dealing with hand-carved bone buttons made by some artisan in a village. You need buttons that are identical, durable, and cheap. You need them by the million. The rise of the modern standing army in the 17th and 18th centuries created a demand that craft simply could not meet. The British Redcoats, the Napoleonic armies… their coats were held together by buttons, and those buttons often bore the regiment's insignia. It was branding. It was identity. And it required a new way of thinking about how to make things. This is where the story pivots from the tailor's shop to the factory floor.
In the late 1700s, an English industrialist named Matthew Boulton—who was partners with James Watt, the steam engine guy—set up a factory in Birmingham. He wasn't making steam engines. He was making buttons. And buckles, and other small metal goods. He used steam-powered stamping machines to churn out millions of metal buttons. This was the birth of the button as an industrial commodity. The materials science shifted. It wasn't about the beauty of a natural material anymore; it was about the performance of a manufactured one. Brass, copper, steel. They were strong, they were consistent, they could be mass-produced.
The button became one of the very first objects to get the full Industrial Revolution treatment. It was a test case for the principles of mass production. And this is where I think the most instructive historical analogy lies. The story of the button isn't just about fashion; it's a perfect microcosm of a resource economy—a boom, a bust, and the brutal disruption of new technology. And that whole drama played out on the banks of the Mississippi River. In the 1890s, a German immigrant named John Boepple discovered that the freshwater mussels in the Mississippi—the ones people called pigtoes and washboards—had shells that were thick, iridescent, and perfect for carving into buttons.
Mother-of-pearl. Suddenly, this muddy riverbed was a goldmine. The town of Muscatine, Iowa, became the "Pearl Button Capital of the World." At its peak, the industry employed half the town. By 1905, Muscatine was producing one-point-five billion buttons a year. That was more than a third of all the buttons on Earth. It was a classic resource boom. People flooded into the area. They lived in shanty towns along the river, dragging the riverbeds for mussels. The process was brutal. The mussels were cooked alive in giant vats to get them to open, and the smell was apparently… unforgettable. Then the shells were blanked—cut into rough discs—and sent to the factories for finishing.
For a few decades, it seemed like an infinite resource. An entire economy, an entire way of life, built on a single, natural thing. This is what I mean by the analogy. It’s the same pattern as the 19th-century whaling industry in New England, or a gold rush town in California. You find a valuable natural resource. You build an entire infrastructure of extraction and processing around it. The community thrives, believing the source is endless. And then two things happen at once. First, you deplete the resource. The mussel beds were over-harvested, dredged to the point of collapse. The ecosystem couldn't keep up.
But the real death blow came from a laboratory. In the 1930s and 40s, chemists perfected new kinds of plastic. Bakelite, and later, polyester. A plastic button could be made in any color, any shape, any size. It was more durable than shell, and it cost a tiny fraction of a penny to produce. The pearl button couldn't compete. The entire industry in Muscatine, that whole world built on the shells of mussels, just… vanished. The factories closed. The boats rotted on the riverbanks. It was over. The natural, beautiful, crafted object was completely and totally replaced by the synthetic, efficient, manufactured one.
What looked like a stable, permanent industry was actually just a brief, 50-year window between one technology—hand-carved bone—and the next—injection-molded plastic. They just didn't know it at the time. From our retrospective view, the outcome looks obvious. But when you’re in it, a boom feels like the new normal. So what does that teach us now? We live in a world made of plastic buttons. They are so ubiquitous, so perfectly functional and so utterly valueless, that they have become invisible. We don't think about them at all. But every time you fasten a cuff or button a coat, you are participating in the final chapter of this long, long story.
The journey of the button is the journey of modernity. From decoration to function. From craft to industry. From the natural world of shell and bone to the synthetic world of the laboratory. It’s a story about how our desire for consistency and convenience slowly erodes our connection to the materials themselves. The button didn't just teach us how to close a shirt. It was one of the first objects that taught us the logic of mass production, of standardization, of the synthetic replacing the real. That logic, born in a Birmingham factory making brass buttons, now builds the world we inhabit.
