During World War Two, in German-occupied Norway, citizens started wearing a small piece of bent wire on their lapels. That object was the paperclip. We think of the paperclip as a solved problem. A perfect, singular object. But at the turn of the twentieth century, the world was drowning in paper and desperately searching for a way to manage it. The modern office was being born, with its carbon copies, its memos, its vertical files. And the common straight pin, the default tool for fastening papers, was a tiny menace. It left holes. They wore the clip to honor a fellow countryman, Johan Vaaler, who received a patent for a paperclip design in 1899. He was hailed as a national hero, a symbol of Norwegian ingenuity. The only problem is, his design wasn't very good. It was a simple rectangle of wire, with the ends overlapping. It lacked the crucial inner loop, the elegant double-oval of the Gem that provides the tension and the spring. Vaaler’s clip was never even manufactured.
He was just a man with an idea that didn't quite work, who happened to file some paperwork at the right time to become a symbol. The clips the Norwegians were actually wearing on their lapels? They were Gem clips, most likely imported from Britain or Sweden. They were celebrating a local hero with an anonymous, foreign invention. And this is where the story gets really compelling. You're just pushing it slightly, within its elastic range. The steel wants to return to its resting shape. That desire is the force that holds your papers together. It’s called torsion. The two interlocking loops work against each other, creating a constant, gentle pressure. It’s strong enough to hold, but not so strong it tears the paper. It's a tiny, elegant engine powered by stored potential energy. All those other patented designs—the Cinch, the Niagara—they failed because they didn't balance this equation as perfectly. They were too tight, or too loose, or too complicated. The Gem just… worked.
Better than anything else. So what historical moment does this resemble? When I look at the story of the Gem clip—this anonymous, un-patented, technically superior design that quietly vanquished all its rivals to become a global standard—I don’t think of other inventions. I don’t think of Edison and the lightbulb, or Bell and the telephone. Those are stories of inventors and corporations and intellectual property. No, the analogy that holds is something older. Something more fundamental. It’s the story of a folk song. Or a spoon. Think about it. Who invented the spoon? The question is meaningless. The spoon wasn’t invented, it emerged.
It was refined over thousands of years, by millions of anonymous users, each making a tiny, incremental improvement. A slightly deeper bowl here, a more comfortable handle there. The Gem paperclip is a modern folk object. It appeared sometime in the 1890s, likely from the Gem Manufacturing Company in Britain, but they never claimed its invention. They just made a good thing. Someone in an office would see one, use it, and realize, "This is better." They'd ask, "Where did you get this?" And the design would propagate, like a useful gene. The Gem clip represents this weird, beautiful hybrid: a folk object that achieved industrial scale. It has the anonymous, user-tested perfection of a spoon, but the ubiquity of a Coca-Cola bottle. And the stress test? What's different now? Today, we have a belief system built around intellectual property. The idea of an anonymous, un-owned, globally dominant design feels… almost impossible. We'd call it open source, maybe. But even open source projects have creators, maintainers, foundations. The Gem clip is a ghost. A perfect solution that appeared out of the ether. If it emerged today, a dozen companies would be filing patents on minor variations, suing each other into oblivion, and spending millions on marketing campaigns to convince us their slightly-worse clip is the one we should be loyal to.
We've lost the ability, I think, to just let the best design win. So when we look back at the paperclip, we're not just looking at a piece of wire. We see a moment in time where utility was king. Where an object could succeed on the pure, simple, unassailable virtue of being good at its job. The myth of Johan Vaaler, the lone Norwegian genius, is the story we want to believe. It’s clean, it’s heroic, it fits our narrative of progress. But the true story, the story of the anonymous Gem, is more complicated, and far more instructive. It reminds us that some of the most important things we have weren't given to us by a hero.
They were simply discovered, refined, and shared. They don't have a creator. They just have users. And in the end, that's a much more powerful legacy. It’s a small, metal reminder that the best ideas don’t always need an owner.
