In 1893, at the Chicago World's Fair, a man named Whitcomb L. Judson debuted a device he called the "Clasp Locker." It was a clunky, complicated series of hooks and eyes meant to fasten high-button boots, and almost every single time it was demonstrated, it popped open. It was an unmitigated disaster. And they just... kept... going! For years! They burned through money. They redesigned it, calling the new version the "Judson C-curity Fastener." They tried to sell it for corsets, for gloves, for anything. Nobody wanted it. The C-curity was no more secure than the Clasp Locker. For almost twenty years, Judson and Walker were selling a product that fundamentally did not work. This isn't just a business failure. This is an act of pure, irrational faith in an idea.

This is the kind of obsession that builds worlds or lands you in a padded room. So, the company is circling the drain. Judson, the original inventor, is basically out of the picture. Colonel Walker is desperate. And in 1906, he hires a young Swedish electrical engineer named Gideon Sundback. And THIS. This is where the story goes from a tragedy of errors to a legend of invention. Sundback is brilliant. He looks at the Judson design—the hook and eye—and realizes the entire concept is flawed.
