A garden snail has more than fourteen thousand tiny teeth. Just like Pip the Badger from our last story, who knew where to find all the best berries, sometimes the smallest creatures have the most surprising secrets. This story is about a little creature who thought he had no secrets at all. His name was Barnaby, and he was a small, quiet beetle who lived in a garden filled with wonders. He loved his home. He loved the smell of the damp earth after it rained and the feel of a cool leaf on his back. But sometimes, when he watched his friends, a little worry would wiggle inside him.
His friend, Squeaky the cricket, could fill the whole evening with beautiful music just by rubbing his wings together. His friend, Beatrice the bee, was always busy, zipping from flower to flower, turning sweet nectar into golden honey. And Florence the butterfly could paint the air with her colorful, dancing wings. Barnaby would watch them and think, "What can I do?" He couldn't sing, or make honey, or dance in the sky. All he could do was crawl along quietly, noticing things that other creatures hurried past. He felt very plain.
And very, VERY small. One sunny afternoon, a strong gust of wind swept through the garden. It wasn't a mean wind, just a playful one. But it blew a tiny, perfect dandelion seed right out of the grasp of a little ant named Alfie. It was Alfie's favorite treasure. He had been carrying it all day, and now it was gone, lost somewhere in the tall green grass. Alfie was heartbroken. His little antennae drooped. Squeaky the cricket saw how sad he was. "Don't worry, Alfie! I'll sing you a song to cheer you up!" And he chirped the loudest, happiest song he knew.
But Alfie was too sad to listen. Then Beatrice the bee flew down. "Oh, you poor dear," she buzzed. "Have a little drop of honey. It will make you feel better." She offered him a tiny, sweet bead of it. But Alfie was too sad to eat. Florence the butterfly fluttered around his head, making beautiful patterns in the air. But Alfie just kept his eyes on the ground, looking for his lost seed. Nothing seemed to help. Barnaby had been watching from under a clover leaf. He saw the big, sad feelings all around his little friend. He crawled over, slowly and quietly.
He didn't say a word. He just sat next to Alfie. He sat there as the sun warmed their backs. He sat there as a ladybug crawled by. He just… sat. Then, because he was always looking at the ground, Barnaby saw something. Tucked right beside a smooth grey stone, almost invisible, was a single, fluffy dandelion seed. It was Alfie’s treasure. Barnaby gently nudged it with his head. Alfie looked up. His antennae wiggled. He saw his seed. Oh, he was so happy. He looked at Barnaby, who was still sitting quietly beside him. He realized that Barnaby hadn't tried to make him feel better.
He had just been there with him while he was sad. And he had been looking closely, the way he always did. That quiet looking is what found the lost seed. Barnaby felt a warm feeling spread through his whole body. He didn't need to sing or fly to be a good friend. His special talent was being quiet. And being kind. And sometimes, that is the most special talent of all.
