On June fifteenth, 1215, at a water-meadow along the River Thames called Runnymede, a failing king was forced to affix his great seal to a list of demands from his most powerful subjects. We were just talking about Pioneer 10, that silent vessel that crossed Neptune’s orbit on June thirteenth, carrying its golden plaque into the void. Two days later on the calendar, but centuries earlier, we find an event that was anything but silent, an event whose echo is louder today than it was the year it happened.

That document, of course, was the Magna Carta. When we look back now, we see the Magna Carta as this foundational text of liberty. A cornerstone of the rule of law, the ancestor of constitutions around the world. We see Clause 39, the promise that no free man shall be seized or imprisoned… except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land. It feels... inevitable. A self-evident truth finally put to parchment. But that’s not what it was. Not then. Ten years from now, looking back at our own time, we’ll be much better at spotting the difference between what something is...

and what it will one day become. In 1215, the Magna Carta was a failure. It wasn’t a philosophical document about human rights; it was a pragmatic, and ultimately unsuccessful, peace treaty. King John was a disaster. He’d lost his family’s lands in Normandy, he’d been excommunicated by the Pope, and he was funding his military failures by taxing his barons into open rebellion. The Magna Carta was their leverage. It was a list of sixty-three demands, most of which were specific, self-serving grievances about inheritance taxes, fishing rights, and the removal of fish-weirs from the Thames.

The barons got the king's seal on the document. And then... it all fell apart. King John had no intention of honoring it. He wrote to Pope Innocent the Third, who promptly declared the charter null and void, calling it shameful and illegal. Within months, England was plunged into the First Barons' War. The great charter was a dead letter. King John himself was dead a year later. From the perspective of 1216, the whole affair was a footnote. A failed negotiation. So what happened? How did a failed treaty become the most important legal document in history?

It didn’t survive because it was powerful. It survived because it was useful. After John’s death, the regents for his nine-year-old son, Henry the Third, needed to rally support and end the war. So they reissued the charter. They took the 1215 version, edited it, stripped out some of the most radical clauses, and presented it as a good-faith gesture. It worked. And it kept working. Over the next century, it was reissued and reconfirmed dozens of times, usually when a king needed money or political backing.

Each time, its meaning shifted. The promise of a trial by one's peers, originally meant to protect a few dozen barons from a vindictive king, was slowly, over generations, reinterpreted. It expanded. It became a principle. The future we now inhabit wasn’t visible to them. They saw a tool for short-term political bargaining. We see the slow, patient construction of an idea: that power must have limits. That no one, not even the king, is above the law. That’s the retrospective view. We can see the seed that they could only see as a rock.

And we're still having that argument today, in our courts, in our parliaments, on the digital platforms that govern our new public squares. We're still negotiating the terms of the charter. Five hundred and thirty-seven years later, on another June fifteenth, a different kind of power was being challenged. Not the power of a king, but the power of the heavens. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin, then forty-six years old, was in Philadelphia, waiting for a thunderstorm. He had a theory. He believed that lightning was not a supernatural act of divine wrath, but a form of electricity—the same stuff he could generate in his lab by rubbing a glass tube with silk.

To prove it, he proposed an experiment. An incredibly dangerous one. He constructed a kite from a silk handkerchief, attached a sharp wire to the top, and tied a metal key to the bottom of the hemp string. The story we all know is that he went out in a storm, flew the kite, and got struck by lightning. He didn't. If he had, he would have been killed instantly. The goal was much more subtle. He stood inside a doorway to keep himself dry and insulated. He needed the hemp string of the kite to become wet from the rain, to conduct the ambient electrical charge from the storm clouds down to the key.

And as he watched, he saw the loose threads of the string begin to stand on end. He brought his knuckle close to the key… and a spark jumped across the gap. He had done it. He had proven that lightning was just electricity. Looking back, we see this as a charming moment in the history of science. Old Ben Franklin with his kite. But again, that misses the point. The retrospective lens shows us something much bigger. This wasn't just about discovering a fact. It was about changing a worldview.

For millennia, lightning was a mystery, a terrifying and unpredictable force wielded by gods. Franklin demystified it. He showed it was a natural phenomenon, something that could be understood, predicted, and even controlled. His immediate invention, the lightning rod, was the perfect expression of this new mindset. It didn’t try to stop the lightning. It simply offered it a safe path to the ground. It was an act of profound intellectual humility and practical genius. It took power away from the realm of the divine and placed it into the realm of the knowable.

That shift is the foundation of our entire modern world. The idea that the universe is not a collection of sacred mysteries, but a set of solvable problems. That through observation and experimentation, we can understand the forces that shape our lives and, for better or worse, turn them to our own purposes. We live inside Franklin's experiment now. From the power grid that lights this room to the microprocessors in our phones, it all started with that spark jumping to a knuckle on a rainy day in Philadelphia.

It was the moment we decided we could steal fire from the gods… and get away with it. And that brings us to a much more recent June fifteenth. June fifteenth, 1991. On the island of Luzon in the Philippines, after six hundred years of dormancy, Mount Pinatubo erupted. It wasn’t just an eruption; it was the second-largest volcanic explosion of the entire twentieth century. The blast sent a column of ash and gas more than thirty-five kilometers—that’s over one hundred thousand feet—straight up into the stratosphere.

For people on the ground, it was an apocalypse. A typhoon passing at the same time mixed with the ash to create a rain of concrete-like mud. Hundreds died. Tens of thousands were evacuated, including everyone from the sprawling Clark Air Base, a cornerstone of American military power in the Pacific. For years, that was the story: a natural disaster, a human tragedy, a geopolitical shift. But a different story was unfolding, silently, far above the clouds. We can see it clearly now, in the data.

The eruption had pumped about twenty million tons of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. There, it mixed with water to form a haze of microscopic sulfuric acid droplets that spread around the entire globe. This haze acted like a planetary sunshade. It reflected a small but significant amount of sunlight back into space. And here is the turn. The thing we now know, that they were only just beginning to measure. For the next two years, the average temperature of the entire planet dropped.

It fell by about half a degree Celsius, or nearly one full degree Fahrenheit. In the middle of a century defined by warming, the Earth suddenly, measurably, cooled. Without intending to, Mount Pinatubo had conducted the largest geoengineering experiment in human history. It proved, on a planetary scale, that pumping aerosols into the stratosphere could cool the Earth. At the time, it was a climatological curiosity. A data point. But looking back from where we stand now, with the climate crisis no longer a future threat but a present reality, June fifteenth, 1991, looks like something else entirely.

It looks like a dress rehearsal. The idea of "solar radiation management"—of intentionally engineering the atmosphere to cool the planet—is no longer science fiction. It's being modeled in labs, debated in governments, and advocated by serious scientists as a last-ditch emergency measure. And the Pinatubo eruption is their primary evidence. It’s the proof of concept. It’s the data that says, this works. So when we look back at that day, we don't just see a volcano. We see the accidental discovery of a global thermostat.

We see the planet running an experiment on a technology that we, its dominant species, might one day be forced to use on purpose. Franklin flew his kite to harness a force he could see. The eruption of Pinatubo showed us we could influence a force as big as the climate itself, without even trying. Three events, on one day in the calendar, separated by centuries. A failed treaty that seeded the idea of limiting human power. An experiment that proved we could understand and harness natural power.

And a catastrophe that revealed our accidental power to alter the planet itself, and gave us the terrifying idea to maybe do it on purpose. Each story is about a new relationship with power—how to constrain it, how to capture it, and how to cope with its unintended consequences. The retrospective view doesn't give us easy answers. It just sharpens the questions. The Magna Carta is an eight-hundred-year-old argument about rules. Franklin’s kite is a two-hundred-and-seventy-year-old warning about ambition.

And Pinatubo… Pinatubo is a thirty-year-old preview of a choice we may soon have to make. On June fifteenth, history doesn't just ask who holds the power; it asks what power is for.
