And in June of 1948, Josef Stalin decides he wants the whole thing. He cuts off all land and water access to West Berlin. No food, no fuel, no medicine. The goal is simple and brutal: starve the two million people of West Berlin until the American, British, and French forces give up and go home. The choices were all terrible. That's World War Three, but this time with atomic bombs. Do nothing? You abandon two million people and signal to the entire world that the West doesn't have the spine to stand up to Soviet aggression. It seemed like an impossible problem. And the solution that emerged was... audacious. It was absurd. The plan was to supply the entire city. By air. Think about that. Everything a modern city needs—from flour and coal to potatoes and newsprint—would have to be flown in, day after day, in all weather. Most experts thought it was impossible. A city that size had never been supplied by air before. But they did it. For almost a year, the Berlin Airlift, or "Die Luftbrücke," the air bridge, was the pulse of the city.

At the height of the operation, a plane was landing at Tempelhof airport every ninety seconds. They were flying in so much coal that the dust permanently darkened the runways. They delivered over two-point-three million tons of supplies on more than a quarter of a million flights. It was a logistical miracle born of pure determination. And it became something more. It became a symbol. You had American and British pilots, who just a few years earlier had been dropping bombs on Berlin, now dropping candy on tiny parachutes to the children of the city. The famous "Rosinenbomber," the Raisin Bombers. It wasn't just about keeping people alive.
