On July fifteenth, nineteen sixty-five, a group of NASA engineers got so impatient waiting for data from Mars that they grabbed a box of pastels and hand-colored the first-ever close-up image of another planet, number by number, on a paper printout. Yesterday we talked about the fireworks of history exploding on Bastille Day, but this... this was a different kind of explosion. It was a quiet one, a cosmic revelation happening three hundred and twenty-five million miles from home, and it changed everything we thought we knew about our solar system. July fifteenth is one of those dates that just hums with creative energy.
It’s a day for first glances, for seeing the world, and other worlds, in a brand new light. And when you look back at it, you see this incredible through-line, this human desire not just to look, but to truly SEE. Let's start with the artists, because that’s where so much of our way of seeing begins. On this day in 1606, Rembrandt van Rijn was born. Rembrandt! The master of light and shadow, the man who could paint the soul of a person with a few strokes of a brush. He didn’t just paint what was there; he painted the feeling of what was there. The weight of a velvet cloak, the glint of light on a helmet, the deep, knowing sadness in an old man’s eyes.
His work, like the famous drypoint print "Christ Presented to the People," is so emotionally dense, so psychologically powerful, that it feels like he’s painting with light itself. Wells, of Edgar Rice Burroughs. A planet of ancient canals, dying civilizations, maybe even vegetation that changed with the seasons.
Scientists were more skeptical, of course, but even they hoped to find a world with a substantial atmosphere, something... dynamic. So Mariner 4 travels for over seven months. It gets there. It has a tape recorder on board—a real, physical tape recorder—that can store exactly twenty-one images. And a tiny, weak transmitter to send them back. The data comes in at a crawl. Eight and a third bits per second. To put that in perspective, your phone is moving data billions of times faster RIGHT NOW. It was going to take hours, days, to get the full pictures. And the team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory... they just couldn't wait.
They were buzzing with anticipation. So as the raw numbers for the first image started printing out from the teleprinter—just a long strip of paper with numbers representing pixel brightness—an engineer named Richard Grumm had an idea. He ran to a local art store, bought a set of pastels, and the team started coloring in the numbers on the paper strip, like a paint-by-numbers canvas. A zero was white, a sixty-three was dark red, and they filled in the shades in between. And as they colored, a shape began to emerge. Not canals. Not cities. Craters. Lots of them. When the hatch opened between the two spacecraft and American astronaut Tom Stafford shook hands with Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, it was more than a photo-op. It was proof of concept. And looking back, that handshake was the symbolic beginning of the international cooperation that built the International Space Station and that will be absolutely essential for humanity's future, whether that's on the Moon, on Mars, or beyond.
