On June twenty-sixth, 1974, a ten-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum was scanned at a supermarket in Troy, Ohio, for sixty-seven cents. Yesterday, we were on the battlefield at Little Bighorn and tracing the birthdays that shaped history on June twenty-fifth. Today, we find ourselves in a grocery store aisle, at the dawn of a revolution so quiet, almost no one heard it happen. Looking back, we can see that this single, mundane purchase was a turning point. It was the moment the analog world of commerce began its long, slow transformation into the digital one we now inhabit.
We just didn't have a name for it yet. Of course, June twenty-sixth holds more than one kind of revolution. If you rewind the clock from that Ohio supermarket, you land in other moments where the world was trying to re-order itself. On this day in 1945, in San Francisco, the ink was drying on a document that was supposed to change everything. Delegates from fifty nations, their own countries still reeling from the devastation of the Second World War, signed the United Nations Charter. It was an audacious act of hope. An attempt to build a global system to, in its own words, "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war." Kennedy’s speech was a public performance for the entire world, a grand statement about freedom and tyranny. It shaped the emotional and political texture of the Cold War for a generation. Its impact was immediate, immense, and undeniable. The UPC scan was an anonymous, technical process. Its impact was invisible, creeping, and cumulative. It didn't inspire millions, but it did quietly restructure the entire circulatory system of global commerce. It made supply chains efficient on a scale never before imagined. It enabled the rise of big-box stores and, eventually, the data-driven world of e-commerce that we all live in now.
