On September first, 1859, telegraph systems across the entire planet spontaneously burst into flames. Telegraph paper caught fire, operators were zapped with electric shocks, and some systems even started transmitting messages on their own... with the batteries completely disconnected. Just yesterday, we were talking about Edison's Kinetoscope and the birth of capturing fleeting images on film. But on this day in 1859, the universe itself projected an image across the entire globe, one so powerful it set our own technology on fire, and one we are still desperately trying to understand before it happens again. It’s called the Carrington Event.
