The earliest known writing from Sumer, around 3400 BC, wasn't epic poetry or a king's decree. It was, uh, basically just receipts. Tallies of grain, lists of cattle. And just as last week we talked about how the Columbian Exchange rewired the entire planet's biology, today we're asking if a few scratches on clay did something even bigger: rewiring the human mind itself. Okay, receipts. That’s a perfect place to start, because it proves my point. Writing wasn't a lightning bolt of genius that created civilization. It was accountancy software that people invented because civilization was already getting too complicated for memory alone. I hear you, but that’s like saying the engine is just a consequence of the car.

Writing IS the engine. Before it, knowledge dies with the people who hold it. You have, what, a few generations of oral history? After writing, you have a library. You can have laws that outlive a king, like the Code of Hammurabi. But who needed those laws? A complex, settled society that already had agriculture and cities. That’s the real turning point! Agriculture creates surplus. Surplus creates cities and trade. Then you have something worth writing down receipts for. Writing is a secondary innovation, a tool that follows the need. I don't know… I think that undersells it. It’s not just about storage. It changes the way we think. Oral memory is fluid, it changes with every telling.

Writing freezes a thought. It allows for, like, detached, linear analysis. It's the precondition for systematic science and philosophy. Or it creates a tyranny of the text. It creates a tiny literate class that holds all the power, that can say "it is written" and end the argument. Oral cultures were incredibly sophisticated, just in a different way. You're assuming our modern, text-based thinking is the only kind that counts. Okay, but consider the alternative. How do you run an empire—I mean a real empire, like the Roman or Persian empires—on oral tradition? You can't. You need standardized messages, tax records, troop movements sent over hundreds of miles.

Writing is the technology of scale. Alright, I'll give you that one. For a certain kind of scale, for that kind of centralized, bureaucratic power, yes, you need writing. But is that the only measure of a successful civilization? Plenty of large, complex societies thrived without it, like the Inca with their quipus, their knotted cords. The quipus are fascinating, but they were for accounting, not prose. You couldn't write a philosophical treatise or a play with knots. Writing didn't just let us count things, it let us build new worlds out of words. It created an external memory for the entire species. That feels… fundamental. It feels fundamental to us because we live on the other side of it.

We can't imagine a world without it. But that's a failure of our imagination, not proof of its supremacy. The move from foraging to farming changed our bodies, our diets, our entire relationship to the planet. Writing was, uh, an administrative upgrade. A powerful one, for sure. But an upgrade. So for you, it's just a tool. A useful, but not essential, piece of the puzzle. For me, it's the operating system. It's the software that allowed human culture to become infinitely complex and self-correcting. Before that, we were just running on biological hardware. I think the hardware—the settled, agricultural society—is what matters. The software is inevitable once the hardware reaches a certain level of complexity.

You're giving the credit to the spreadsheet, and I'm giving it to the business that grew big enough to need one. Maybe. But even if it was inevitable, its arrival still feels like the moment the past could finally speak to the future. And everything changed. I mean, without it, we wouldn't even be having this debate. We wouldn't know about Sumer or Hammurabi. That's fair. We are absolutely the children of writing. I just think it has more siblings than we admit. We see history through the lens of the records that survived, and, well… those were all written. So the tool that records history ends up looking like the most important thing in it. Huh. So here's the real tension, then.
