The first thing he noticed was the hum. Last week, a single line of text in a forgotten diary changed everything we thought we knew. This week, there is no diary. There is only the hum. It was a low, constant thrum. The kind of sound you feel in your teeth. He was on his back, staring up. The ceiling was a perfect, seamless white. The walls were white. The floor was white. He sat up. No bed. No chair.
No window. Just the four walls, the floor, the ceiling. And a single, featureless door. He was dressed in a simple grey tunic and trousers. No shoes. He looked at his hands. They were clean. Unmarked. Who was he? The question arrived without panic. A simple, empty space in his head. He stood, the floor cool beneath his feet. He walked to the door. No handle. No lock. Just a smooth, vertical seam in the wall.
He pushed. Nothing. He slammed his shoulder into it. The impact barely made a sound. The room seemed to drink it up. "Hello?" His voice was flat, deadened by the perfect acoustics. He waited. Only the hum answered. He began to pace. A memory flickered behind his eyes. A flash of green. The smell of cut grass. Gone. He stopped. Another one. A woman’s laugh. Warm and bright. It vanished. He chased it, trying to hold on, but it was like trying to cup water in his hands.
The flashes came faster. Rain on a hot street. The sharp taste of coffee. A searing pain in his chest, so real he gasped and clutched at his tunic. It was a ghost pain. An echo. But the loss it carried was real. He felt a profound sense of urgency. A desperate need to get out. To get back. To who? To what? He didn’t know. He only knew he was running out of time. He beat on the door, a frantic, useless rhythm against the silent white.
Defeated, he slid down the wall to the floor. He closed his eyes, not in surrender, but in focus. He let the hum wash over him. He stopped fighting the fragments and let them come. The cut grass was a picnic. The woman’s laugh was from that day. Her name was… Sarah. Yes. Sarah. The rain on the street was later. An argument. Shouting. The squeal of tires. Then the pain in his chest. A bloom of red on her white dress.
He remembered. He was… Jacob. They had crashed. He had to know if she was okay. He scrambled to his feet, his mind clear. His purpose sharp. He had to get to Sarah. He looked at the door, ready to tear it from its frame. But then he stopped. He looked at his hands again. Clean. Unmarked by any crash. He looked at the white room. Not a hospital. Too perfect. Too clean. And the hum. It wasn't the sound of a building's ventilation.
It wasn't machinery down the hall. He finally understood what it was. It was an engine. Idling. The flashes weren't memories he was recovering. They were data he was replaying. The sterile room was a reboot state. A system diagnostic running after a critical failure. He wasn't Jacob, the man in the crash. He was the car.
