The last train from the city leaves at eleven fifty-eight PM. Last week, we said the final line of a story is the ONLY one that matters. This week, we're riding that idea all the way to the end of the line. Leo was the last one left. He watched the final city platform slide away, a smear of sodium-orange light swallowed by the night. The train car was an empty, humming tube. Cracked vinyl seats, the smell of wet wool and old disinfectant. He was tired. So tired. Just two more stops.
The train rattled on, a familiar rhythm. A comfort. But then it passed Northwood. His stop. He saw the station lights blur past the window, a fleeting ghost. He sat up straight. Okay. Weird. Maybe an express route on weekends? He didn't think so. He stood, his legs unsteady, and walked to the digital map above the doors. It was blank. Just a soft, blue, empty screen. His heartbeat started to pick up. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Matching the rhythm of the wheels on the track. He tried the door to the next car.
Locked. He walked the length of the carriage, past sixty-four empty seats, and tried the other door. Locked. He was sealed in. The automated announcer crackled to life, the voice distorted, glitching. "Next... station... is... mind... the..." The voice cut out. The lights flickered once. Twice. Then died. Plunging him into absolute blackness, save for the faint emergency strip on the floor. He was alone in the dark, moving at sixty miles an hour. He pressed his face to the cold glass of the window, trying to see...
anything. A house. A star. A single point of light. But there was nothing. Just a perfect, featureless void. The train wasn't just moving forward anymore. He felt a strange lurch, a shift in pressure. It felt... like it was climbing. Which was impossible. This track was flat. It had always been flat. Then, a new sound. A low, sustained tone. It grew louder, vibrating through the floor, through the soles of his shoes. The rhythmic thump-thump of the wheels began to slow. The train started to decelerate, a long, grinding squeal of metal that set his teeth on edge.
He braced himself against a pole as the darkness outside the window was suddenly, violently, replaced by a blinding, clinical WHITE. It flooded the car, erasing every shadow. The train shuddered to a final, complete stop. A soft hiss. The doors slid open. Leo shielded his eyes. He took a hesitant step forward, out of the train, onto... cool, polished linoleum. The air smelled sharp. Antiseptic. A woman in blue scrubs turned to a man in a white coat. She gestured toward Leo with her chin.
"See? I told you that new auditory stimulation therapy would work." The man nodded, looking down at a clipboard. He made a note with a pen. "It's incredible," he said, his voice distant. He didn't look at Leo. He looked at the chart in his hands. "After seven years... he's finally awake."
