Microsoft stock popped after hours while Alphabet took a nosedive, handing Wall Street two wildly different answers to the multi-billion-dollar AI question. In yesterday's episode, we warned that the street was demanding immediate proof that massive artificial intelligence spending is generating real cash. Well, the numbers landed last night, and the market delivered an instant verdict. Microsoft crushed expectations across the board. Revenue jumped nineteen percent to ninety-two point three billion dollars, while adjusted earnings per share hit four dollars eighty-nine cents, comfortably beating the street. The engine room here was Azure. Microsoft's cloud revenue soared forty-eight percent to thirty-three point one seven billion dollars, proving its commercial enterprise bet is paying off right now.
Then there is Alphabet, and this is where things get messy. Alphabet delivered a rare double miss on consensus estimates. Revenue came in at one hundred twenty-seven point six billion dollars, while earnings per share cratered twenty-six percent to two dollars twelve cents, well short of the three-dollar consensus. The drag came from core advertising: Google search grew twelve percent, falling short of analyst targets, while YouTube ad growth slowed to nine percent. Here is the twist that should make you lean in: Google Cloud revenue actually exploded, surging one hundred and three percent year over year to thirty point seven billion dollars. Its operating profit tripled to over eleven billion dollars. So why did the stock tumble? Because investors panicked over ballooning AI capital expenditures and a sudden swing into negative free cash flow.
Cloud growth is hyper-accelerating, but funding that computing infrastructure is devouring Alphabet's immediate margins. Outside the cloud giants, the semiconductor market split clean down the middle over the past twenty-four hours. On the winning side: AI memory. South Korean giant SK Hynix reported a staggering sevenfold jump in quarterly operating profit, with eighty percent operating margins, and revealed that its high-bandwidth memory production is effectively sold out through 2029. That electric print ignited US memory players, sending Micron Technology up nearly six percent and boosting SanDisk. But if you look at automotive chips, the story flips completely. NXP Semiconductors issued a softer fourth-quarter outlook, sparking fresh fears of an automotive slowdown.
That single guide knocked NXP down four percent and hammered power-chip supplier ON Semiconductor down five percent. The takeaway across US tech this morning could not be clearer. If your hardware or infrastructure is tied directly to raw AI data compute, buyers are handing you a blank check. But if you are relying on legacy digital advertising or auto manufacturing to justify massive infrastructure spending, the market will punish you before breakfast. That is the divide driving the trading day.
