MARA Holdings just abandoned its entire Bitcoin strategy, selling one-point-five BILLION dollars worth of crypto. Just yesterday, we were talking about how companies like Nvidia and Micron are riding the AI wave to the moon. Well, today we’re seeing the other side of that story — a company that tried to pivot to AI, but only after dumping its core asset at exactly the wrong time. This is a mess. So, let's get into the headlines. First up, the company that makes the machines that make the chips everyone is desperate for — ASML. Analysts just raised their price target to nearly twenty-two hundred dollars a share. They're betting big on the adoption of next-generation EUV lithography, with sales guidance pushing forty-five billion euros. Despite some jitters about competition, the people who know are saying ASML's roadmap is basically unshakable.
Then there’s IBM. Big Blue is trying SO hard to be part of the cool kids' AI club. They've got the quantum computing projects, they've got the GenAI initiatives, but the market is just not buying it. The consensus ahead of their earnings report is a 'Hold' rating, with concerns about overvaluation and sluggish growth. We're talking four to five percent revenue growth for the year. In this AI boom, that’s basically standing still. Their recurring software revenue is solid, but lumpy transactional deals are slipping, and that's making investors nervous. And finally, the big picture. Gartner just dropped a number that should make your head spin. They're projecting global AI spending to hit two-point-seven TRILLION dollars in 2026. That is a nearly fifty percent jump from 2025. And the biggest slice of that massive pie?
AI infrastructure. The very chips and systems that companies like ASML make possible, and that companies like MARA are desperately trying to get a piece of. Okay, let's go back to MARA, because this is a masterclass in how NOT to chase a trend. Here's the thing you need to understand. MARA was a Bitcoin mining company. Their whole strategy, for years, was "HODL" — hold on for dear life. They accumulated a massive stack of Bitcoin. Then, in the first quarter of this year, they blinked. They sold one-point-five billion dollars' worth. The problem? They sold right before the rebound. Their Bitcoin-per-share metric has cratered thirty-four percent in just six months. And the core business? The mining operation? It's still losing money. We're talking adjusted EBITDA losses of about eighteen million dollars last quarter alone, and that's before you even account for the Bitcoin price swings.
So what's their grand plan? A pivot to AI. They're building out massive data centers. Sounds great, right? It's the hot new thing. But here's the part that gets buried in the press release. That capacity isn't expected to be ready until the middle of 2028. And as of today, they have exactly ZERO signed tenant leases. They are building a giant, expensive "if you build it, they will come" project, funded by selling their primary asset at a low point. It's speculative, it has no immediate revenue, and it’s a huge bet that they can compete in a space dominated by giants. Now, contrast that with ASML. They aren't chasing the AI narrative; they are the NARRATIVE. They build the incredibly complex, house-sized High-NA EUV machines that chipmakers like TSMC and Intel need to produce the next generation of AI processors.
You literally cannot build the future of AI without them. Their order book is full. They have capacity expansions already planned for 2027 and 2028 based on firm customer commitments. Their margins are projected to hit fifty-six percent. This isn't a company hoping a trend will save them. This is a company with a technological moat so wide, it's practically an ocean. So you have two stories. One is a company with a durable, almost monopolistic hold on a critical piece of technology. The other is a company that panicked, sold its assets, and is now trying to rebrand itself into the very trend it's too late for. Look, the AI boom is real. That two-point-seven trillion dollar number from Gartner proves it. But a booming theme doesn't guarantee a dependable business. What we're seeing right now is a great sorting.
We're separating the companies that own the essential, foundational technology from the ones just slapping an "AI" label on their press releases. As a quick reminder, this is for your information and entertainment only, and is not intended as financial advice. The difference between a real AI play and a speculative one is becoming painfully, brutally clear. And for a company like MARA, it’s a lesson learned the hard way.
