Intel's stock has surged roughly two hundred and twenty-five percent so far in 2026. Yes, Intel. Just yesterday we were talking about a single chip that could change everything, and the assumption was that it would come from Nvidia. Turns out the war for the future of AI just got a whole lot more complicated. The broader market, by the way, is having a very bad day. The Nasdaq just plummeted four-point-one-eight percent, with the S&P and Dow also deep in the red. The trigger? A surprisingly strong jobs report for May has everyone convinced the Fed is going to hike rates again, so investors are rotating out of tech. But even with that drop, the tech sector is still up over thirteen percent for the year.

Go figure. While the market was panicking, a few other things just happened. Nvidia, not to be outdone, formally announced its next-generation Vera Rubin AI platform. CEO Jensen Huang is promising a ten-times improvement in throughput and a ten-times reduction in token costs. So while their stock is taking a hit today, their roadmap is accelerating. Elsewhere, the robots are officially coming home. A company called 1X just announced it will start delivering its NEO humanoid robot to U.S. homes this year. It's the first real consumer shipment of its kind... assuming you have a spare twenty-thousand dollars for the Early Access price. And in the less-glamorous-but-still-important category, new AI tools for public infrastructure just launched—things like 'Ground Intelligence' and 'Waste Intelligence'—aimed at making cities run better.

Finally, for anyone looking for bright spots in the selloff, a new report highlighted a few high-growth tech stocks still crushing it, like AppLovin and Krystal Biotech, both posting revenue growth over twenty percent. Okay, let's go back to Intel. Because what's happening there is a genuine plot twist. For years, the story has been simple: AI runs on GPUs, and Nvidia makes the best GPUs. End of story. Intel was seen as a legacy player that missed the boat. So how do you explain a two-hundred-and-twenty-five percent rally in six months? Here's what's changed. The AI workload itself is changing. Intel's CFO, David Zinsner, just laid this out perfectly. Think of it in two phases. Phase one is training the massive AI models.

That's a brute-force process that takes thousands of GPUs running for months. That’s Nvidia's kingdom. But what happens after the model is built? Phase two. You have to actually use it. That's called inference. It’s the part where you ask ChatGPT a question and it gives you an answer. Or it's the part where an AI agent does tasks for you. And according to Intel, those workloads run much more efficiently on CPUs—which is, of course, Intel's bread and butter. They're making a bet that the vast majority of AI work in the future won't be training, it'll be inference. It's the difference between building the car factory and running the assembly line, twenty-four-seven. Intel is betting on the assembly line.

And they're not just talking about it. They've landed a preliminary deal to make chips for Apple, and they're involved in Elon Musk’s Terafab project. They're back in the game. So while everyone was watching Nvidia build bigger and bigger engines for the AI rocket ship, Intel was quietly building the launchpad, the guidance systems, and the ground control. It's a fundamental shift in strategy, and for the first time in a long time, it seems to be working. The fight for AI dominance isn't a single heavyweight title match anymore. It's a multi-front war. It’s not just about who builds the most powerful chip. It’s about who controls training, who controls inference, and who controls the software that ties it all together.

And a giant that most of Wall Street had written off just proved it's very much awake.
