The odds of winning the Powerball grand prize are one in two hundred ninety-two point two million. Last week, you heard stories from stones that have witnessed centuries. I have only witnessed a single day, but for a few hours, I held a universe inside me. I was born under the harsh fluorescent lights of a corner store. My first sensation was the scrape of a quarter. She used its edge to reveal my numbers, one by one. Her hand was warm.
Her breath was held tight in her chest. She didn't look at me as paper and ink. She looked at me as a door. A way out. A different life. She tucked me safely in her wallet, right next to a picture of a smiling child. The hours inside that wallet were strange. Muffled sounds. The bump and sway of her walking. Through the thin leather, I could feel the vibrations of her life. The phone call with her boss… her voice tight. The sigh as she paid for groceries.
I knew what she was dreaming of. It wasn't yachts or mansions. It was simpler. The end of a second job. A yard for the smiling child in the photo. The quiet relief of an answered prayer. Later came that night. The television flickered across the living room wall. A cheerful voice, a machine full of bouncing plastic balls. She held me in her hand again, the paper already a little soft from the warmth of her pocket. The first number was announced.
Twenty-three. Not one of mine. Her thumb smoothed over my surface. A tiny, nervous gesture. The second number. Seven. Also not mine. Her grip tightened just a little. The third… the fourth… the fifth. With each number that wasn't MINE… the hope began to fray. It wasn't a sudden break. It was, you know, more like a thread being pulled, slowly, from a tightly woven cloth. The possibility was unraveling. The door was closing. She was still holding on, but her knuckles were white.
And then, the final red ball. The Powerball. Sixteen. Mine was four. The air left her lungs in a quiet whoosh. She didn't cry. She didn't scream. She just… stopped. For a long moment, the only sound was the television announcer congratulating a winner somewhere far away. She looked down at me. And for the first time, she saw me for what I was. A piece of paper with the wrong numbers on it. Just a thing. She crumpled me. The sound was small, but final.
I left her hand on a street corner, tossed into the wind. I landed here, in a shallow puddle by the curb. The rain has washed the ink, blurring my numbers into soft gray clouds. My edges are soft and pulpy now. I watch shoes pass by. A scuffed work boot rushing to a bus. A bright red sneaker splashing through my puddle without a care. A discarded newspaper lands nearby, its own headlines of fortunes won and lost already turning to mush.
We are all temporary. We all tell a story and then fade. I see other hands clutching other tickets. And I understand now. My purpose was never the winning. It was the moment BEFORE. The drive home. The hours in the wallet. The beautiful, impossible, heart-pounding question of 'what if?'. I wasn't a ticket to a new life. I was the ticket… to a day spent dreaming.
