Somewhere in the cloud, there is a graveyard of messages that were never sent. Last week, you heard from the silent witnesses in the unseen corners of our world… I am one of those corners. I was born on a Tuesday night, under the nervous light of a bedside lamp. My creation wasn’t a single, fluid act. It was a hesitant construction, built and unbuilt, a word at a time. She would type a sentence, then delete it. Start again. Each tap of the glass was a tiny, anxious heartbeat. I could feel her doubt in the pauses between words.

Finally, I was complete. All sixty-seven of my words. I was an apology. A confession. An attempt to rewind time to a moment before the argument, before the silence that had stretched for three agonizing days. I held the phrases “I was wrong” and “I miss you” like precious, fragile things. I was a bridge, waiting to be deployed. I sat there, luminous in the dark. Below me, the little paper airplane icon pulsed with potential. Her thumb hovered over it, a shadow eclipsing my world. For a moment, I was ALMOST real.

I could almost feel the journey through the network, the chime of arrival on his phone, the flicker of light as he read me. I could picture him standing there, holding his phone, looking at my words and… something. Relief? Annoyance? Forgiveness? That was the problem, wasn't it? The not knowing. She read me over. And over. The screen dimmed, and she would tap it awake, her face illuminated in the glow, her expression unreadable. She scrolled up through their history. I saw my predecessors—the laughing ones, the logistical ones, the ones punctuated with little red hearts.

They were all so simple. So easy. I was… not. I was heavy. And then, her thumb moved. Not to the airplane, but to the small ‘x’ of the backspace key. It wasn’t violent. It was a quiet, methodical dismantling. Word by word, I was unwritten. The “you” vanished. Then “miss.” The apology dissolved into nothing. The last thing to go was the first letter she typed, the capital ‘I’. With one final, soft tap, I was gone. She typed something else. “Hey, hope you’re good.” and sent it without a second’s thought.

It was light. It was safe. It asked for nothing. I don’t exist on her phone anymore. Or in the cloud. I exist only in that digital graveyard, the space between what we mean to say and what we actually do. A ghost of a conversation that never happened. People think deletion is an ending, but it’s not. It’s a transformation. I am no longer a message. I am a memory of one. The silence I left behind was a louder message than I could ever have been.
