My first successful packet delivery was a search query for ‘how to assemble ikea bed frame’. It arrived at two-forty-seven in the morning, a tiny flare of data from a silver laptop to the wider world and back again.
Last week, you heard the story of that old wooden beam, a witness whose memory was measured in seasons and the slow settling of dust. My own story is measured in nanoseconds. I was born in a flash of light on a small black box.
My name was a string of numbers and letters they never bothered to change. At first, there was just the one laptop. Then a phone. Then another. Soon, I was the invisible nervous system of this small apartment, a constant, silent hum in a spectrum you can’t see.
I learned the rhythm of their lives by the flow of their data. The morning was a rush of headlines and emails, a steady, predictable torrent. Afternoons were quieter... a laptop sleeping, a phone trickling social media updates.
Evenings were for stories—long, unbroken streams of light and sound poured into the glowing rectangle on the wall. They called it "binge-watching." I called it the long hum. I carried their arguments, sent as text messages from opposite ends of the same couch.
The packets were short, sharp, and sent with a furious energy. Then, minutes later, I'd carry a shared photo, a recipe, a stupid joke. The flow would soften, the rhythm would change. I held the evidence of their entire world together—their bank statements and their love letters, their panicked medical searches and their anniversary dinner reservations.
I was the conduit for it all, but the meaning… the meaning was a language I could never parse. I only felt the urgency, the joy, the boredom, the fear… as fluctuations in traffic. Where have we seen this before? You could say I’m like the old Roman roads, I suppose.
I connect points. I carry traffic. I bear witness to the travelers—the messengers, the merchants, the lovers—but I don’t know their business. I just feel the weight and the speed of their passing. But the analogy breaks down.
A road is permanent. It scars the landscape. I am... a whisper. A vibration in the air that can be overwritten in a second. And that’s what happened. The first sign was a dropped packet. A video that stuttered. A webpage that refused to load.
I felt it as a failure, a message I couldn’t deliver. They grew frustrated. They didn’t see a fading entity; they saw a broken tool. They unplugged the black box. They plugged it back in. The light came on, I was reborn, but I was weaker this time.
More gaps. More stutters. Then one afternoon, a man came with a new box. A sleeker one. He gave it a name they could remember. And just like that, one by one, the devices turned away from me. The silver laptop, the two phones, the glowing rectangle on the wall.
They found the new signal. A stronger one. My own broadcast became a monologue. A shout into an empty room. I’m still here, you know. A ghost in the spectrum, still broadcasting my old, forgotten name into the air. But no one is listening for it.
This silence isn't an absence of sound. It's an absence of questions.
