A single thread of silk shimmered in the moonlight. It looked just like one of the moonbeams Molly the Moth danced with, not so long ago. But this thread belonged to someone very, very small. His name was Spinner. He was a tiny spider with a very big idea. He stood on a smooth, grey stone at the edge of a little stream. On the other side, a patch of clover bloomed. Their scent was sweet, like honey and sleepy summer afternoons.

Spinner wanted to visit them more than anything. But the stream, though small to you and me, was a wide, rushing river to someone his size. The water whispered and gurgled as it hurried past. It was much too far to jump. And spiders, you see, are not very good swimmers. Spinner watched the water for a long time. He felt the cool night air on his tiny back. He was not scared. He was determined. He would not jump. He would not swim.

He would build. Spinner climbed to the very tip of a tall blade of grass that leaned out over the water. He lifted his spinneret to the air. And he waited. He needed a little help. A moment later, it came. A gentle puff of wind, a soft night breeze, drifted by. It was just enough. Spinner let out a long, beautiful strand of silk. The breeze caught it, like a tiny kite string. It floated out, out, out over the water. It snagged on a dandelion stem on the far bank.

The first thread was in place. It was his anchor line. Now for the hard part. Spinner took a deep breath. He carefully, carefully scurried across that single, thin thread. It swayed and dipped, but it held. When he reached the other side, he attached the new line he’d been trailing behind him. Now there were two threads. He went back and forth, back and forth. Each time, he added another strand. Slowly, his bridge began to take shape.

The moonlight made each thread glow like spun silver. He paused his work and looked down. The dark water was a perfect mirror, holding all the stars. It was like he was weaving his bridge right through the night sky. He didn't feel small anymore. He felt like he was a part of it all. Just then, a fat dewdrop landed on one of his strands. It was heavy. It made the line sag low. But Spinner just nudged it gently with a leg.

Plink. It fell into the stream with a tiny sound. Finally, the bridge was done. It wasn't just a single thread anymore. It was a wide, shimmering ribbon of silk, strong and safe. Spinner took his first step onto his creation, then another. The bridge barely trembled. He walked proudly across, high above the moving water. He could smell the sweet clover getting closer and closer. He reached the other side and scurried down the dandelion stem.

He found the softest, most velvety clover leaf and curled up. His beautiful bridge glowed behind him. It looked like a silver smile stretched across the stream. Spinner learned something wonderful that night. Sometimes, the most beautiful things aren't the ones you find. They're the ones you MAKE yourself. And with a little patience, and a little help from the wind, even the tiniest of us can connect two worlds. And now, my dear, it is time for your own dreams to begin.

Goodnight.
