A firefly's light is called cold light, because it makes almost no heat at all. In that same quiet forest where we left Willow the maple leaf resting on the moss, a new adventure was just beginning. As the sun tucked itself away behind the hills, the whole world turned a deep, sleepy purple. And down in the tall grass, one little light began to blink. Blink. Then blink again. That was Sparkle. A brand new firefly. Sparkle looked at their own little glow, a tiny dot of gold in the big, growing dark.
Then, Sparkle looked up. Waaay up. At the giant, silver moon, and a thousand diamond-bright stars. And a thought, as small as Sparkle was, popped into their head. My light... is so very tiny. "I wish I could shine like that," Sparkle whispered to a night-blooming jasmine flower. The flower just breathed out a sweet, sleepy scent in reply. That settled it. Sparkle decided to go on an adventure. A great quest for MORE light. They fluttered up, up, past the ferns and the sleeping bluebells. They passed a grumpy toad by a puddle.
"Too bright!" the toad croaked, blinking his big round eyes. "Some of us are trying to sleep!" Sparkle's light flickered with embarrassment. See? Even here, my light is either too much or not enough. They flew higher, past their firefly friends and family, all dancing together in beautiful, glowing patterns. "I'm going to the moon!" Sparkle called out, trying to sound brave. A wise old owl, perched on a branch, heard the tiny voice. "Hoo-hoo," the owl ruffled his feathers. "The moon is a long way away for little wings." But Sparkle was determined.
They flew higher than they'd ever flown before. The great big trees started to look like tiny bushes below. But the moon… the moon didn't seem any closer at all. And the stars just kept winking, as if they knew a wonderful secret. Sparkle felt their wings getting tired. Their little light felt even smaller up here, all alone in the vast, dark sky. They drifted back down, feeling a little defeated, and landed on a wide, flat mushroom in a part of the forest they didn't recognize. And that's when Sparkle realized...
it was VERY dark here. The moon was completely hidden by the thick leaves above. The stars were gone. Even the friendly blinking of the other fireflies was nowhere to be seen. A little shiver of worry ran through Sparkle's tiny body. Am I… lost? Just then, a tiny voice squeaked from below. "Hello? Is anyone there?" Sparkle blinked their light. Blink. And in that small, perfect circle of gold, they saw a little caterpillar, inching along a twig, looking very frightened. "I'm lost," the caterpillar wiggled.
"I can't see the path back to my milkweed leaf." Sparkle looked down at the scared little caterpillar. And then at their own light, painting a safe, golden path on the dark forest floor. It wasn't the moon. It wasn't a star. It was just… Sparkle's light. And right here, right now, it was the MOST important light in the whole world. "Don't worry," Sparkle said, and their voice was steady and calm. "I can help." And so, blinking their light slowly and brightly, Sparkle led the caterpillar, inch by inch, all the way back to its soft, green leaf.
"Thank you," the caterpillar whispered, and began to munch happily. Sparkle flew back toward home, but something felt different. Their light didn't feel small anymore. It felt… just right. It felt like home. And as they rejoined the beautiful, dancing lights of their family, Sparkle's glow was the happiest of all. A tiny, perfect star, right here on Earth.
