Adventure Beneath the Blazing Sun: Secrets of the Atacama Desert

In some parts of Chile’s Atacama Desert, rain has NEVER been recorded. Never? Not even a little bit? Not a single drop. It’s a world away from our bioluminescent adventure in the deep sea, isn't it? Last week we were surrounded by water and living light. Today… we’re in a world of blinding sun and almost NO water at all. Welcome to the great sand sea! Whoa. It’s… huge. And so quiet. All I can hear is the wind. And all I can feel is the heat! It’s like standing in front of an open oven. This is one of the biggest challenges for any desert explorer.

The heat, and the thirst. How does anything live here? It looks so… empty. Empty? Oh, you’re not looking closely enough. The desert is full of secrets. You just have to know where to find them. See that lizard, scrambling over the rock? It’s a master of survival. It does a little dance, lifting its feet off the hot ground, one after the other, to keep from getting burned. It’s dancing to stay cool? That's funny! But what about plants? And look at that! It looks like a mountain… made of sand. That, my friend, is a sand dune.

Some are taller than skyscrapers. But… how? How does a mountain of sand just… get here? The wind brought it. The wind? But it’s just air! Ah, but here, the wind is a sculptor! An artist! It’s the second great power of the desert, after the sun. It blows across the land and picks up a single, tiny grain of sand… like this one. Then it carries it a little way, and puts it down. Okay… Then it goes back and gets ANOTHER one. And another. And another. It does this millions, billions, trillions of times. Over hundreds, even thousands of years.

Every grain joins the pile, and slowly, the dune begins to grow. So… the dune is MOVING? EXACTLY! It’s a slow-motion river of sand. The wind pushes the grains up one side, and they tumble down the other. The whole dune is creeping across the desert, inch by inch. It’s alive! Wow. I never thought of it like that. So the whole desert is always changing. Always. And the creatures that live here are just as amazing. Look… over there. See those tracks? They’re tiny! What made them? A Fennec fox. It hunts at night, when it’s cool.

And see how big its ears are? Those aren’t just for listening. They’re like built-in air conditioners. Blood flows through them and the wind cools it down, which helps cool the whole fox. So everything out here has a trick. A secret for staying alive. Every single thing. From the cactus that stores water like a living barrel, to the beetle that collects morning dew on its own back. The desert doesn’t feel so empty now, does it? No. It feels… full of stories. Exactly. The desert isn’t a wasteland. It’s a kingdom, ruled by the sun and the wind.

And its subjects are the most incredible survivors on Earth.
